There have been dangerous developments and fears of an escalating conflict in the Middle East on Saturday after the U.S. unleashed its firepower by launching a wave of strikes inside Syria and Iraq. Washington is calling it retaliation for last Sunday's drone attack that killed three U.S. soldiers, while both Syria and Iraq are condemning the attacks and warning of dire consequences. Caryn Lieberman has the details. Newly released documents are revealing more about Canada's policies around letting Nazis into the country and letting them stay. There's been renewed pressure on the federal government to release more information, in the wake of last year's political scandal over a standing ovation in Parliament for a man who fought in a notorious Nazi unit. Abigail Bimman reports on the documents, and what those pushing for their release want to be done. Canada has seen a steady influx of asylum seekers over the past few years, with an increasing number of claims coming from Mexican citizens since the Trudeau government scrapped a visa requirement for Mexican travelers in late 2016. The unofficial "Roxham Road" border crossing south of Montreal was closed last winter to manage the flow. But as Gloria Henriquez reports, Quebec processed more than 25,000 asylum claims at the airport in 2023 — more than double the amount in 2022 There was a major shake-up in Canadian pharmacare this week, with insurance company Manulife announcing a deal with grocery giant Loblaws. Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaws will become the exclusive suppliers of so-called "specialty drugs" — a small, but pricey segment of the pharmacare industry. At least one competitor is now exploring its "legal options" over the deal. And as Mike Drolet reports, the industry minister and some experts are concerned about what it could mean for consumer choice. And finally, the world's most powerful telescope just captured the most detailed images of 19 spiral galaxies, and the millions of stars that call them home. About 60 per cent of all galaxies are believed to be spiral galaxies, and our solar system sits in one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way. As Joe Scarpelli explains, astronomers are in absolute awe. In Alberta, there were Saturday rallies in the province's two largest cities to oppose Premier Danielle Smith's sweeping new LGBTQ2S+ regulations on gender identity. This comes after Smith published a video on social media on Wednesday, saying the government will require parental notification and consent if a child 15 years or younger changes their name and pronouns at school. Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley joined protesters in Edmonton, rallying simultaneously with another demonstration in Calgary. All of them expressed anger over Smith's newly announced plan to restrict important procedures for transgender youth. Global’s Kabilan Moulitharan and Craig Momney speak with concerned protesters on the ground. A growing movement of Russian women is demanding the return of their husbands, sons, and brothers from the military front, after they were mobilized after a decree by President Vladimir Putin in September 2022. "Our families didn't count on this actually. Our men weren't ready for this situation neither morally, nor physically. They are not military professionals, they are of civilian professions and we are saying it's necessary to bring them home from the front," said Maria Andreeva, an activist and wife of a mobilized Russian soldier. The Moscow prosecutor's office said Saturday's rally had not been coordinated with the authorities, issuing a warning about calling and participating in unauthorized mass events. Around 20 journalists were detained by police, placed on a bus and taken to a police station, according to reports. They were released a few hours later without charge. There are still another nine months to go until Americans head to the polls, and long before the primary process even heats up, it would appear that the ticket is setting the stage for a repeat of the 2020 election. But the idea of a Trump-Biden rematch is garnering far less enthusiasm than it did the first time around, with polls showing fatigue setting in. It appears the two older candidates are attempting to outdo each other, to lure in what votes might exist come November. Global's Reggie Cecchini reports. Migrants were on the edge of the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, Tex. on Saturday, surrounded by rows of concertina wire as National Guard soldiers patrolled the area on boats. Eagle Pass has become a flashpoint in a dispute between the White House and Texas’ Republican Governor Greg Abbott over federal and state powers to deal with illegal immigration. A vehicle convoy, reportedly calling themselves the "Take Our Border Back" convoy, carrying Americans opposed to illegal immigration arrived in the area on Friday night. Participants plan to rally at three points near the U.S.-Mexico border on Saturday, with organizers saying the action will focus on peaceful protest and prayer. Eagle Pass resident Jesse Fuentes warned of a "potential civil war" while speaking to residents on Friday. "Political pundits, certain individuals, certain groups claiming to be an 'Army of God' are coming to our community to spread hate, and to spread dissension," Fuentes said.
