The first Little Blue Penguin to be born on the West Coast hatched Jan. 1, 2024, at the UC San Diego's Birch Aquarium. The chick will be hand raised out of public view for the first few crucial months of its life and its sex will be announced soon. A small plane crashed into several mobile homes in Clearwater, Florida on Thursday evening, resulting in the death of the pilot and two residents on the ground. The Clearwater Fire and Rescue Department responded to calls about a “structural fire” around 7:15 p.m. and extinguished a fire in roughly half an hour. Emergency services searched the impacted mobile homes for hours in search of victims either on board the plane or inside one of the homes. Three of the homes were cleared safely, with just one minor injury reported. Before crashing, the pilot had reportedly radioed in a Mayday distress call, according to Police Chief Scott Ehler. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The NHL is heading back to the Olympics. Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Friday during the league’s all-star festivities that its players will be allowed to compete at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy, and at the 2030 Games, which is currently without a host city. The NHL went to the Games five times between 1998 and 2014 — the last best-on-best men’s tournament — before skipping the 2018 event for what it said were financial reasons. “We know how important international competition is to our players,” said Bettman. A gas truck explosion engulfed a residential and commercial area in Kenya's Nairobi on Thursday just before midnight, killing three and injuring more than 300 people. Philip Awinyo Jeremiah reached for his phone to film the plumes of smoke from his nearby apartment building, flames shooting feet into the air as residents screamed. He told Reuters on Friday that he and his mother were frightened by the explosions, adding that his mother thought "the world was ending." Kenya's government spokesperson said on Friday "corruption" and a lack of enforcement of gas regulations led to the tragedy, while authorities would find and prosecute those responsible for the explosion.
