Premier Danielle Smith says the government’s sweeping and controversial gender policies for children and youth will ultimately protect young Albertans from making decisions they would later regret. Critics, however, have accused the premier of politicizing an issue that should ultimately be personal, and say the move will further marginalize LGBTQ youth. »»» Subscribe to CBC News to watch more videos: http://bit.ly/1RreYWS Connect with CBC News Online: For breaking news, video, audio and in-depth coverage: http://bit.ly/1Z0m6iX Follow CBC News on TikTok: https://bit.ly/3TnHioe Follow CBC News on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1sA5P9H Find CBC News on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1WjG36m Follow CBC News on Instagram: http://bit.ly/1Z0iE7O Subscribe to CBC News on Snapchat: https://bit.ly/3leaWsr Download the CBC News app for iOS: http://apple.co/25mpsUz Download the CBC News app for Android: http://bit.ly/1XxuozZ »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» For more than 80 years, CBC News has been the source Canadians turn to, to keep them informed about their communities, their country and their world. Leaders in the B.C. Sikh community say a well-known Sikh activist and friend of murdered gurdwara president Hardeep Singh Nijjar was the target in a South Surrey shooting early Thursday morning. In a press conference Thursday evening, BC Gurdwaras Council spokesperson Moninder Singh identified the target as Simranjeet Singh, a well-known member of the Sikh community and a supporter of the Khalistan movement. The members also believed this shooting was the work of the Indian state. "We feel this is definitely what India's pattern of violence has been against Sikhs in the last year or so," Singh said. "This is what India would do to frighten, or warn, or strike fear in the hearts of Sikhs." Surrey RCMP confirmed no one was hurt in the shooting. The rural municipality of Ste. Anne in Manitoba has adopted a bylaw that would see those who abandon their animals, such as leaving them behind in an empty home or dropping them off on the side of the road, fined $1,000 per incident in a way to deter such an act. There are already laws and regulations federally and provincially to try and prevent such animal abandonment, but advocates say bylaws like Ste. Anne's could be an added boost to such prevention. As Global’s Sean Previl reports, a Ste. Anne councillor would love to see it replicated across Canada and animal aid organizations say it's another way to protect our furry friends. On Friday, Wiarton Willie, Ontario's famed groundhog, was carried out onto the stage at Wiarton Arena, to decide the fate of winter for Canadians. South Bruce Mayor Jay Kirkland, who can speak Groundhogese, had a quick word with Wiarton Willie as the groundhog told the local politician whether he saw his shadow or not. If Wiarton Willie saw his shadow, then we would experience six weeks more of winter. If the little rodent does not see his shadow, then Ontario would see an early spring. After speaking with Willie, the mayor told the gathered crowd, “no shadow. Which means early spring!” For more info, please go to https://globalnews.ca Subscribe to Global News Channel HERE: http://bit.ly/20fcXDc Like Global News on Facebook HERE: http://bit.ly/255GMJQ Follow Global News on Twitter HERE: http://bit.ly/1Toz8mt Follow Global News on Instagram HERE: https://bit.ly/2QZaZIB #GlobalNews #groundhogday #canada
