Vancouver resident Mark Milburn has used bank drafts in the past as a safe guaranteed form of payment but says he’ll be wary of using them in the future after falling victim to fraud. “How is any business going to be able to trust a bank draft anymore,” said Milburn. Back in early January, the Vancouver resident was selling a $10,000 luxury watch on Facebook Marketplace. He says he’s used the social media platform multiple times without issue. However, to be certain and before he sold the watch, Milburn says he went in person to RBC where he’s a customer asking the teller to check the authenticity of the bank draft. Milburn says the RBC teller assured him the draft was valid. Consumer Matters reporter Anne Drewa explains what happened next. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed on Wednesday a large prisoner exchange that brought 207 Ukrainians back home. Ukraine and Russia have carried out periodic prisoner swaps via intermediaries since the war began nearly two years ago, despite the absence of peace talks since the early months. The Russian Defence Ministry said each side had received 195 soldiers. "Hi, Mom, it is me. Yes, we have been exchanged today. We are in Russia already. Just now. How are you doing?" one Russian soldier said over the phone. The latest and biggest exchange was on Jan. 3, when 478 captives were traded, with mediation by the United Arab Emirates. Write it off — or fix it? Those are the choices at the centre of a battle between one vehicle owner and his insurer, Allstate. Mehmed Hujic lives in the small hamlet of Conrich, Alta. On Nov. 16, 2023, he was driving home when a deer ran out in front of his vehicle. The right, front end of his vehicle suffered the brunt of the collision. But Hujic pointed out the vehicle was still drivable and, he expected, “fixable.” He was shocked when the insurance adjuster told him it wasn’t. “They want to write off my vehicle, I don’t want to do that,” he said. “It’s still drivable. Transmission, engine good. It’s just damage from deer.” Hujic said he was offered an insurance payout of under $5,000, which he said substantially undervalues his vehicle. Tomasia DaSilva explains what makes your vehicle fixable or a write-off.
