On Tuesday, Pakistan court handed former prime minister Imran Khan a 10-year jail term for leaking state secrets, the former prime minister's media team said. On August 5, 2023, police arrested Khan in Lahore after a court sentenced him to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts, barring the opposition leader from contesting an upcoming election. “I would like to say that this verdict against Imran Khan is a very bad decision because the whole nation knows he is an honest person. Five suspects have been arrested in the fatal shootings of six people whose bodies were found last week strewn in a desolate patch of California's Mojave Desert, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said on Monday. Officials said the killings are believed to have stemmed from a dispute over the illicit marijuana trade. When police discovered the scene, it was so grisly that TV stations blurred some of the images captured by their helicopters overhead. Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has been given a four-year ban from the sport after committing an anti-doping rule violation, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said Monday. Despite Valieva’s disqualification, the Russian Olympic team will still receive a bronze medal in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The U.S. has been promoted to gold according to updated results published Tuesday. Russia has said it does not accept the results. In Moscow, Russians expressed their disappointment after news of Valieva’s four-year ban from figure skating. “As a matter of fact, they just crossed her out. I think this is just unfair,” said one Moscow resident, Yuliya. Cases of group A Streptococcus (group A strep) are on the rise across Canada and have already claimed five lives in New Brunswick this year — barely a month into 2024. Father and husband Dan Wetmore, died at the age of 49 on Jan. 19 — just a week after falling sick with the aggressive, bacterial infection. Dan had been sick with a sore throat, inflamed sinuses and frequent vomiting when he went to the Moncton Hospital. His condition deteriorated quickly, his family says. “He had his hands on the side of the railing on his bed. Just trying to raise himself off the bed because his body hurt so bad. He said it was the hardest thing he’s ever had to do in his entire life,” Kim Wetmore, Dan’s wife, said. Kim and Zach are now urging anyone with flu-like symptoms to get tested, as strep A can be treated with antibiotics if it's caught early enough. Global's Suzanne Lapointe reports.
