The independent inquiry into foreign electoral interference began its public hearings, but the commission first needs to work out what it can — and can't — talk about publicly. The expected Canadian expansion of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) to people whose sole condition is mental illness has been put on hold, following a joint parliamentary committee report found fundamental issues have not been resolved. Health Minister Mark Holland announced the pause on Monday, which is the latest delay to the expansion and comes months after a postponement last year, due to opposition from the country's top psychiatrists. As Sean Previl explains, Ottawa still needs to table legislation to enact the pause and time is already running out to do so. School is cancelled across the province as the first nor’easter of the year blows through Nova Scotia. Snowfall warnings are in effect for Atlantic coastal counties from Yarmouth to Sydney, plus Pictou and Antigonish counties. Environment Canada says a total of 15 centimetres is expected before the snow tapers off beginning Monday afternoon for western counties, and Monday evening for eastern counties. “Gusty northeast winds accompanying the snow may cause reduced visibility at times in blowing snow over exposed areas,” it said. “Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.” Vanessa Wright reports.
