The world's largest cruise ship has left Miami and set sail for its maiden voyage on Saturday. But experts are sounding the alarm. Though the “Icon of the Seas” is built to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) — which burns cleaner than traditional marine fuel —environmental groups say methane leakage from the ship's engines are a risk to the climate. "It's a step in the wrong direction," said Bryan Comer, director of the Marine Program at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), adding that the luxury cruise liner will emit more greenhouse emissions than if it were running on common fuels used in present day. The ship’s chief engineer Stig Eriksen, however, disagrees. “Sustainability is, important part of our journey to a destination net-zero in the future and LNG is one part of that step forward on that journey,” he said. Methane is reportedly 80 times worse over 20 years than carbon dioxide, making cutting methane emissions vital to mitigating global warming. Fake pornographic images of pop superstar Taylor Swift spread across social media this week, sounding the alarm about the rise of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Swift is one of the world's biggest pop stars, and this shows how anyone can be targeted. With the U.S. presidential election campaign in full swing and Canada's federal election on the horizon, there are calls for stronger laws to stop damaging deepfakes from being produced. "It is alarming," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Friday. Global's Mike Drolet reports. White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said on Friday that the U.S. welcomes the United Nations' investigation into its refugee agency for Palestinians (UNRWA), following allegations by Israel that agency staff members were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. Britain, Italy and Finland became the latest countries to pause funding for the United Nations' refugee agency on Saturday — joining the United States, Australia and Canada, which had announced a pause in aid the day before, after Israel said 12 UNRWA employees were involved in the cross-border attack. The agency has opened an investigation into several employees and severed ties with them. On Saturday, the spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, criticized the decision by some countries to pause funding for UNRWA. Rudeineh said that the decision “sends a wrong message” and that the humanitarian funding was needed for the people in Gaza. The Israeli foreign minister called on Saturday for the agency to be "replaced with agencies dedicated to genuine peace and development" and urged other countries to pause UNRWA funding. On the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp operated during the Second World War, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz voiced his concern about an increase in extreme-right tendencies in Germany. “More and more reports are emerging about neo-Nazis and their dark networks. And at the same time, right-wing populists are gaining ground, stirring up fear and sowing hatred,” Scholz said on Saturday. The Social Democrat’s sentiments followed recent nationwide protests across the country against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which were triggered by reports that two senior members took part in a meeting which involved plans of a mass deportation of foreign citizens. “A ban won't change the attitudes of people who vote for the AfD. But we could escape this danger of the AfD sitting in parliaments,” protester Stephan Nietfeld said during an AfD protest in Düsseldorf.
