Demonstrators held a silent gathering in the northern French town of Beauvais on Saturday, to pay tribute to a female farmer and her daughter who died when a car ran into a protest roadblock in the southwestern Ariege region earlier this week. The farmers also took a moment to remember colleagues who have died in recent years, with some dying by suicide due to the stress of their working conditions. "This suffering in the agricultural world has to stop at some point,” FNSEA Farmers' Union vice-president Luc Smessaert said. Meanwhile, farmers elsewhere in France maintained a series of nationwide protests, arguing government measures announced to quell the demonstrations did not go far enough to meet their demands for better pay and living conditions. On Friday, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's government dropped plans to gradually reduce state subsidies on agricultural diesel, and announced other steps aimed at reducing the financial and administrative pressures faced by many farmers. The FNSEA, France's biggest farming union, said it would keep up its protests and many farmers remained at roadblocks set up by motorways and major roads on Saturday. Others stuck to their threat of setting up roadblocks around Paris. The national foreign interference inquiry will hold its first public hearings this week. ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson speaks with Dick Fadden, a former CSIS director, and Vina Nadjibulla, an international security specialist at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, about the threat of foreign interference, protecting national security, implications for Canada’s foreign relations, and more. Plus, what’s at stake for the parties when MPs return to Parliament for the 2024 session? Stephenson sits down with The Globe and Mail’s Ottawa Bureau Chief Bob Fife and The Toronto Star’s Deputy Ottawa Bureau Chief Stephanie Levitz to discuss where the leaders stand ahead of the session. The panel also discusses Prime Minister Trudeau’s strategy to rebound in the polls, the potential political fallout over a court ruling on the Emergencies Act, and former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson’s sharing the stage with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. Le Québec va perdre au moins un milliard de dollars cette année en raison des baisses de revenus d'Hydro-Québec. Les données obtenues par Radio-Canada montrent que le manque à gagner dans les coffres du gouvernement est causé par un déficit d'eau record dans les réservoirs d'Hydro-Québec dans le Nord du Québec. La société d'État se fait toutefois rassurante : la population ne manquera pas d'électricité.
