Canada’s Jewish community is raising concerns about the worrying rise in antisemitism in this country. Since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel in which militants killed about 1,200 and took some 250 people hostage, hate crimes against Canada's Jewish community have increased significantly. In Toronto, Canada’s largest city, there were 98 reported hate crimes between Oct. 7 and Dec. 17 last year compared to 48 in the same period in 2022, according to data from the Toronto Police Service. Caryn Lieberman reports on the rise in antisemitism and the impact it's having on Canada’s Jewish community. Health Canada has green lit a drug previously approved for schizophrenia and depression to treat symptoms of agitation in Alzheimer’s patients – a common symptom of the disease. Rexulti (brexpiprazole) oral tablets manufactured by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Canada Inc. and Lundbeck Canada Inc. were issued a Notice of Compliance by the regulator, according to a company release Wednesday. This approval was given after three 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, the release said. Global's Katherine Ward explains. An Ipsos poll conducted for Reuters showed Americans are unhappy about a Trump-Biden election rematch that came into sharper focus following the former president's New Hampshire victory. Potential voters expressed frustration with the increasing likelihood of a Trump-Biden rematch, citing in some cases the two candidates' age as a factor and runaway partisanship. "I want a fresh president, fresh blood," said Alicia Lowenstein of Orlando, Florida. "Biden Trump fatigue is very real," said Danielle Vinson, a political science professor at Furman University. Real estate and insurance experts are urging the Canadian government to begin to work on creating a home rating program based on the risk to a house posed by weather extremes. This type of weather-risk data is increasingly available in American states like Florida – a state that is increasingly subject to the whims of climate change through storm surges and hurricanes. But in Canada, homebuyers are largely flying blind – with little ability to determine how weather threats could impact property values. As our Kam Razavi explains, experts say climate risk should be considered when choosing where to set down roots. Most Canadians don’t think the quality of health care in their province is likely to improve, a new poll suggests, despite new federal health accords with several provinces designed to quell the health-care crisis unfolding across Canada. The poll by Leger comes nearly a year after the federal government offered a $196-billion health accord to the provinces to increase health funding and address a growing shortage of health-care workers. And while there's no way to predict what your experience will be with Canada's health-care system, experts say there are ways to advocate for yourself and loved ones. Global's Naomi Barghiel reports.
