Two people injured in a deadly helicopter crash Monday in northwestern British Columbia remain in critical condition, while two others have been upgraded to serious condition, according to health officials. A four-woman team, including a pair of B.C. residents, has claimed victory in one of the world’s most grueling races and raised more than a quarter-million dollars for ocean conservation while they were at it. The “Salty Science” crew claimed first place in the women’s class of the World’s Toughest Row — Atlantic 2023 on Saturday. The competition involves rowing, with no stopping and no support, from San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canary Islands to Nelsons Dockyard in Antigua. “We’ve been training, the four of us together, for three years,” Lauren Shea, a master’s student at UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries told Global News. Shea was joined by Isabelle Côté, an SFU marine biology professor, as well as Chantale Bégin and Noelle Helder, both U.S. academics in marine biology. As the calendar flipped to 2024, the sports card hobby had a great deal of anticipation brewing inside. Hobbyists new and old were looking forward to chasing cards of new generational talents, such as Connor Bedard and Victor Wembanyama. The industry went through a major boom when COVID-19 hit in 2020, bringing back many who may not have opened a pack of cards for a couple of decades. The mother of a B.C. man, who was found dead inside his home last October, is hopeful the identification of a person of interest may help bring her family the answers and closure they need. Russia unleashed a mass air strike on Ukraine on Tuesday, killing at least six people and wounding dozens of others, according to local officials. The early-morning missile attack mostly targeted the country's two largest cities, the capital Kyiv, and Kharkiv, in the east. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said at least 20 people — including three children — had been wounded across at least three districts, and that several apartments and non-residential buildings had caught fire. "I have an old grandmother, so I can't just leave her behind and run away. That's why we hid in the corridor, then there was an explosion, the walls were shaking and glass broke. We got very scared. Then we were told to leave our building,” local resident Tetiana said. Ukraine's air force said the military had destroyed 21 out of 41 missiles fired by Russia. Kyiv has repeatedly called for higher quantities of advanced air defence systems from its Western partners, as it struggles to defend itself from the combined Russian strikes.
