Canada's low-income households experienced a harder hit to their disposable cash in the third quarter of 2023 as higher interest rates made it more difficult for this group of Canadians to save, new data shows. Data from Statistics Canada found the wealth gap between the top 40 and bottom 40 per cent had increased by half a percentage point, with the cost of living making it tougher for those earning less to save for a rainy day. It also found youth to be the only age group to see a drop in mortgage debt, but the inaffordability of homes may be a cause for this. As Sean Previl reports, with the Bank of Canada's first interest rate announcement of the year looming, financial experts say it could be a while before a rate cut comes. And as a result, the rich may be seeing benefits while the poorest are finding it difficult to keep up. Political leaders, police and border agents will convene next month to tackle the growing problem of auto theft that is plaguing most Canadian cities. This comes as York Regional Police revealed Monday that they had uncovered a “prolific crime group” responsible for the theft of high-end vehicles across Ontario, and had recovered 52 vehicles worth more than $3.2 million. In Toronto alone, there were 9,600 vehicles stolen in 2022 – a three per cent increase from 2015. In the same year, vehicle thefts in Quebec rose by 50 per cent and by 35 per cent in Atlantic Canada. As Kyle Benning reports, vehicle theft is becoming a billion-dollar enterprise across Canada and government and police are scrambling to respond. At the monthly gathering of European Union (EU) foreign ministers on Monday, national representatives reacted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Sunday comments rejecting a “two-state solution.” The meeting was also attended by counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League secretary-general. "I think that we have to stop talking about the peace, the peace process, and start talking more concretely about the two-state solution process,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said. “What kind of peace are you talking about? So, let's talk about what we want to do. What we want to do is to build a two-state solution." Separately, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said from the West Bank that there was an “international consensus on creating a Palestinian state” and that the consensus should now be “transformed into practical steps.” On Sunday, Netanyahu reaffirmed a hard line against any Palestinian state as it would pose "an existential danger" to Israel, while United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday that abandoning a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict was "unacceptable."
