Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ram Mandir dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Ram in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday. The temple is built on a site that is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, and this event holds great importance for Hindus worldwide. But why is it controversial? “The gems of Lord Rama’s place here, I think for India, it’s just something amazing,” said Swami Vishwananda, member of Hindu religious organization ‘Bhakti Marga’. In 1990, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindu Nationalist Party, started a campaign to build a new temple in Ayodhya. The proposal gained momentum in 1991 when the party took power in Uttar Pradesh. Thousands of Hindus attempted to demolish the Babri Mosque, leading to riots between Hindus and Muslims that claimed hundreds of lives. “If someone’s place of worship and their faith is threatened, there will be pain, automatically, but people are working according to the system and the law," said Haji Asad Ahmad, Muslim community leader of Ayodhya. In 2020, the construction of the Ram Mandir was started after a significant judgement by the Supreme Court of India in favor of the Hindus regarding the disputed religious site. The court also directed that an alternative piece of land in Ayodhya be provided to the Muslim community to build a new mosque. Ireland and the U.K. were battered by Storm Isha over the weekend, facing heavy winds and intense rainfall that triggered weather alerts and travel advisories across the region. Hundreds of scheduled flights and trains were cancelled across the board, while many airlines caught by the storm mid-flight were forced to divert their routes for the safety of passengers. Scotland's train services in particular will reportedly be impacted, until Network Rail Scotland concludes inspections on its tracks. Isha is the ninth named storm to hit the region in the last year and expected to continue wreaking havoc until Monday evening. A rally took place at the Malborough Hotel in Winnipeg on Sunday after a video taken from the lobby showing a distressed, restrained woman went viral. Leaders have said the woman in the video is from a First Nation in Northern Manitoba, and she was in Winnipeg for a medical appointment. “That video that went out made a lot of people angry and made a lot of our people upset. And when you call on us, we will be there, because we are there for our people the grassroots people,” said MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee. Police say on Christmas Day, hotel staff called them at 10:30 a.m. to remove a loitering woman but they were unable to respond. Just before 1 p.m. hotel staff called police again, alleging the woman had pulled out a knife and attempted to stab a staff member after being asked to leave a second time. A statement provided by Rakib Hoque, the Marlborough hotel manager, says police advised them to “protect their guests and staff,” which is why they restrained her. “Our only intention was to prevent this young woman from harming herself or others until WPS arrived,” Hoque said. When asked by Global News, police said the use of restraints was justified as a staff member at the hotel had been a victim of assault. Since 2005, Palestinians in the West Bank have known no other leader than Mahmoud Abbas and he is not well regarded. Widely seen as corrupt, incompetent, and working hand-in-hand with the Israelis. Observers will tell you he fears losing – and who would he lose to? – most likely Marwan Barghouti who has been in prison for more than 20 years serving multiple life sentences – if Palestinians had a "Nelson Mandela," many believe it would be Barghouti. Israel says he’s a mastermind terrorist, but supporters say the charges have been fabricated. Daniele Hamamdjian has more as the two-state solution continues to be widely proposed. Tens of thousands of people woke up to a foul stench in the air Sunday morning in parts of Metro Vancouver. It was an acrid smell, like burning plastic or creosote. "We didn't know what it was. I said, it smells like tar out here and that was it. Nobody knew," one Burnaby resident said. The Burnaby Fire Department says they've determined it was not a toxic release from the Parkland refinery. While we now know where the odour came from, we still don't know what it was. Julia Foy reports.
