The New York Times is suing the creator of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence bot the Times alleges was trained on millions of its copyrighted articles. It's not the only such lawsuit, but it is the biggest. What this all boils down to are questions that will determine the future of a technology that has the potential to change the world, for good or ill. How different are a human and a computer, when each is learning from example? As machines become able to mimic the creative endeavours humans have mastered, what compensation is owed to the creators they learned from? And can bots like ChatGPT even survive without free access to a world of copyrighted material? As Israel’s war on Hamas rages on, the number of Palestinians killed keeps piling up. On Sunday, Israel escalated its attacks, with the torment in Gaza growing for civilians. According to Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry, more than 25,000 Palestinians have died and more than 62,000 have been wounded since the latest wave of violence. The United Nations (UN) chief says the bloodshed is heartbreaking and that Israel's military operations have spread "mass destruction." The level of death, despair and displacement is unprecedented, and there is no end in sight to the fighting. Mackenzie Gray has the details. It's been almost two years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and now there are questions over who's responsible for a deadly blast in Russian-controlled Donetsk. At least 27 people died when a busy market was shelled. Russia's foreign ministry called it "a barbaric act of terrorism" against civilians, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that there were “particularly severe Russian strikes” in the Donetsk region. Redmond Shannon has more. The stunning development happened just hours before Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was supposed to meet with supporters in New Hampshire. Amid a housing crisis, losing your home so the landlord can renovate and hike the rent is a frightening prospect. Laws to prevent "renovictions" have been on the books in B.C. and other markets for a number of years. Now, as Sean Previl reports, Hamilton in Ontario is joining the trend.
