After almost two years, and a few extra hours of waiting, Ottawa’s iconic Rideau Canal officially reopened to skaters on Sunday. The skateway’s return comes after last year’s unseasonal warmth kept it closed for the entire winter for the first time in its history. “What a beautiful day today, it’s a blue sky and the ice is quite good. And it’s nice to be outside with the family,” local skater Martine Gagnon said. “Last year, we missed it a lot and we were unable to come. But this year, it’s wonderful.” Shortly before the reopening, the National Capital Commission (NCC) delayed the official start of the skateway’s 54th season, because it said the ice needed more time to fully freeze after overnight flooding. The NCC says the skateway is open for a roughly one-kilometre stretch between Bank Street and Fifth Avenue, adding that as ice conditions become safer, it will open more sections of the skateway, which winds through 7.8 kilometres of the capital when fully frozen. A resident who lives near Vancouver General Hospital says he regularly witnesses hospital staff and security discharging patients onto a street bench. “They rush them to this bench, and they are left there to fend for themselves sometimes in not much more than a hospital gown,” Remi Caudron said. “Just yesterday, a gentleman just had a hospital blanket over him, and it was raining.” Caudron said it first started happening between four to five years ago. “The first thing (I noticed) was the noise because it always comes with resistance from the person being brought out of the hospital, especially in this weather,” he told Global News. “(There) is shouting, commotion, and (I) hear it from my balcony.” The resident said he’s seen “dozens” of patients being dropped off on the street bench. He said he’s tried to contact the city, the police and social services regarding the issues. WARNING: Video contains graphic content not suitable for all viewers. Discretion is advised. On Sunday, a explosion struck a crowded market in Donetsk, a Ukrainian city under Russian control, leaving at least 25 people dead, according to the Russian-appointed head of the Donetsk region. Meanwhile, families grieved for their lost loved ones, while bodies lay on the blood-soaked snow near the city's market. “Most likely, she passed because half the body was lying under the table; I pulled it out myself. I arrived — still warm, but that's all. The woman is gone," said the husband of a woman killed in the shelling. Russian officials assert the attack was conducted by the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian government has not yet made a statement regarding the claims while Russia's foreign ministry has denounced the strike. The long-anticipated Hindu temple in the holy city of Ayodhya is only half-finished — and being built where a 16th-century mosque once stood. That history of tension all leads to Monday, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the temple in a move seen by some analysts and critics as a ploy by his Hindu nationalist party to galvanize voters ahead of spring's national election. A meteor blazed across the night sky over eastern parts of Germany on Sunday. A dazzling moment, usually only captured by chance on permanently installed webcams. In a rare event, astronomers were able to predict the impact, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday. Michael Aye, a researcher at the Planetary Research Institute in Berlin, was able to capture the meteor after a tip from his colleague Franck Marchis at SETI Institute. Aye told Reuters the one-metre diameter (3.2 feet) meteor was detected only three hours before impact by Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky. According to Aye, it was only the eighth time that a prediction of such an impact by the minute was possible. According to NASA, the tiny asteroid was set to "disintegrate as a harmless fireball" west of Berlin, near the town of Nennhausen in Brandenburg. Meteors are objects in space that range in size from dust grains to small asteroids. When they heat up in Earth’s atmosphere, they make a bright trail.
