In Japan's Niigata prefecture, a traditional winter festival has taken place for centuries. The festival involves throwing married men onto a snowy hill while they wear their traditional attire. The event's aim is to strengthen the bond between married couples, and it has been going on since the 18th century. It's believed to have started as a way for men to retaliate against outsiders who married local girls. After the husbands are thrown down the slope to their waiting wives, participants smear charcoal ink on each other's faces in hopes of good health.

At least three people were killed and dozens were injured on Tuesday, when explosives stored at a private residence detonated in Nigeria's Oyo state, its governor said on Wednesday. The neighbourhood of Ibadan, which is the capital of Oyo state, is about 130 kilometres from the country’s commercial capital of Lagos. Footage filmed by eyewitnesses showed badly damaged buildings and vehicles, as panicked residents stood on streets. According to officials, emergency services and security officials used bulldozers to clear debris during a search and rescue operation the day after. Gov. Seyi Makinde said in a statement that search and rescue operations were underway, adding that the state government would provide temporary accommodation for those who lost their homes. Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei praised free markets and slammed socialism at Davos on Wednesday, during the first overseas tour for the self-proclaimed 'anarcho-capitalist' who is battling to fix a major economic crisis at home. During his speech, Milei focused on the role of the state across a wide range of activities, which he said amounted to levers of control rather than allowing citizens the freedom to prosper through their efforts. The trip marks a test for right-wing Milei, a relative political newcomer who took office last month after a rapid ascent from acid-tongued economist and TV pundit to the presidency. He is keen to win backing for his economic ideas, which include shutting the central bank and adopting the dollar.
