Thousands of German farmers gathered in Berlin on Monday to protest against the federal governments plans to raise taxes on farming operations and to implement “fair prices” for farmers’ products. The decision was made as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his coalition struggles with its budget. German Finance Minister Christian Lindner addressed protesters Monday afternoon telling them that although subsidies for agricultural diesel will not expire “immediately,” that there was no money for further tax subsidies. With hundreds of tractors blocking the streets since the early morning, the ongoing demonstration is expected to draw up to 5,000 more, along with 2,000 trucks and roughly 10,000 protesters from all around the country. In response to Lindner, German Farmers’ Union head Joachim Rukwied took to the stage in support of demonstrators, making it clear that they would not clear the streets until a stop was put to the government’s tax adjustments. Like many other Gazans, the al-Hawajiri family has resorted to using seawater to bathe and wash their clothes due to the lack of clean water across the enclave, the family said. The family, which has found shelter by the seaside in Rafah following their displacement, adds that they are also struggling to find food and warmth. “We collect salty water from the sea so we can wash our clothes and things," said the young Yasmeen al-Hawajiri, who spends her mornings filling buckets of water from the sea to bring to her mother. As the war in Gaza crosses the 100-day mark, Khitam al-Hawajiri, Yasmeen’s mother, says the lack of clean water has left the family struggling. “There is no cleanliness in our life here at all. Since the (start of the) war, we have been struggling due to the (lack of) water, food, drinking, everything. In an incredible sighting that has left tourists in Thailand amazed, a rare white Omura’s whale was spotted off the coast of Phuket on New Year's Day. A volcano in Iceland erupted for the second time in less than a month on Sunday, with orange lava bursting through two fissures near the fishing town of Grindavik. Authorities had ordered residents to leave hours earlier as a swarm of small earthquakes indicated an imminent eruption. The nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa -- one of Iceland's biggest tourist attractions -- also shut and said that it would remain closed until at least Tuesday. Grindavik, a town of 3,800 people about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, was previously evacuated in November when the Svartsengi volcanic system awakened after almost 800 years with a series of earthquakes that opened large cracks in the earth between the town and S├╜lingarfell, a small mountain to the north.
