People gathered at a Shinto Shrine in Tokyo on Saturday to participate in an annual ice bath ritual and pray for the quick recovery from a deadly New Year’s Day earthquake that rocked the country. A group of 28 men and four women splashed freezing water onto themselves at the Kanda Myojin Shrine in Tokyo before being blessed by a priest in a tradition that began 37 years ago. “We had a tragic start of the New Year, so today I participated in the purification ritual to pray for the recovery (in the disaster areas),” said a 51-year-old dentist who participated in the tradition, Mototsugu Matsuura. The powerful 7.6 magnitude New Year’s Day earthquake was centred near Noto, about 300 kilometres from Tokyo on the opposite coast. At least 23 people were killed and dozens of others were injured following a mudslide in Colombia on Saturday. The mudslide was brought forth by heavy rains in the northwest region of Choco and engulfed a busy highway that connects Quibdo and Medellin. Though temporarily halted due to adverse and unstable conditions, national and emergency services are actively working to recover any victims. “[Corpses] will be recognized as their relatives reach the prosecutor's office in the city of Quibdo to recognize them through photos,” Choco’s governor Nubia Cordoba said in a statement. Following a series of joint British-American strikes on Houthi rebels late Thursday, the U.S. launched another attack on the Yemen-operated group Friday, triggering anger and defiance from Palestinian supporters in Yemen amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. “This brutal British [and U.S.] aggression on Yemen is because the Yemeni people are standing with Gaza and with the resistant Palestinian people,” Yemeni citizen Nour-al-din Shamiri said on Saturday. The strikes came as retaliation to Houthi attacks on ships travelling in the Red Sea since November — shipping efforts U.S. President Joe Biden's administration has vowed to protect. “We will make sure that we respond to the Houthis if they continue this outrageous behavior,” Biden said on Saturday, as protesters in the U.S. are calling for an end to the strikes. Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam has said that the strikes, thus far, have had no significant impact on Houthi’s capabilities to continue preventing Israel-affiliated vessels from passing through the Arabian Sea and Red Sea. As many have feared for months, the strikes signal another concerning step toward a wider conflict in the Middle East — as the violence in Gaza continues and the death toll has surpassed 23,000. Boeing is struggling to keep the public's trust after the mid-air panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines plane the first week of January, resulting in the grounding of the 737 Max 9s in the U.S. But it's not the first time Boeing's been under a microscope, with the 737 Max 8s also being grounded for months following two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. And now the Federal Aviation Administration says it will be increasing its insight and auditing the production of the Max 9s.
