WARNING: Video contains violent content. Discretion is advised. On Wednesday, one of the journalists who were held hostage by gunmen during the takeover of an Ecuadorean TV station said, “I thought it was my last day on Earth and I wouldn’t see my children again. They hunted us, they looked for us everywhere, and they took us to the set with the intention,” Alina Manrique, TC TV journalist, added. Gunmen stormed a studio at public broadcaster TC on Tuesday afternoon, carrying long-range guns, grenades and dynamite, part of a surge in violence that has prompted President Daniel Noboa to name 22 gangs as terrorist organizations to be targeted by the military. Some 329 people, mostly members of gangs, have been arrested since the state of emergency began, according to the Armed Forces. South Africa called on the World Court on Thursday to order an emergency suspension of Israel's military operation in Gaza, as the court began hearings in the genocide case brought against Israel. In the Hague, Netherlands, South Africa's Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola compared Israel's operations in Gaza to the Rwanda genocide: "Rwanda stands out as a stern and severe rebuke to all of us for having failed, for the international community having failed to prevent it from happening. Let us not have to live with the same regret when it comes to Palestine." Israel says its only means to defend itself is by eradicating Hamas, and blames the Islamist group for all subsequent harm to Palestinian civilians for operating among them, which the fighters deny. The case, brought to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague, accuses Israel of violating the 1948 genocide convention, enacted in the wake of the mass murder of Jews in the Holocaust, which mandates all countries to ensure such crimes are never repeated. Enquête | November 30, 2023 The Church of Scientology is well known for its opposition to psychiatry and the use of psychotropic medications. The show Enquête infiltrated the Church to show exactly what alternatives Scientology proposes to those with diagnosed mental illness problems. Since its founding in the 1950s, the Church has offered up its own alternative theories on the functioning of the human brain and even its own remedies to psychiatric problems. The report shows Church officials providing medical advice and encouraging people to stop taking their prescribed medications; a prerequisite for a purification process at the center of the doctrine of the Church. « The Purification Rundown » involves taking potentially toxic doses of vitamins, sold out the back of a mechanic’s garage. Those who follow the program also undergo intensive sauna sessions every day; a medically risky regime approved by doctors friendly to Scientology. With snow finally on the ground across much of Canada, and even more expected this weekend in some parts of the country, it's likely many people will be breaking out their shovels to clear their sidewalks and driveways. But that simple chore can actually pose some risks to your health, with the potential of a heart attack or stroke for some people, depending on risk factors. As Sean Previl reports, one Ottawa city councillor is asking people to listen to their bodies when out shovelling — so that they don't end up experiencing what he did five years ago.
