Reverend Al Sharpton and his National Action Network picketed outside the New York City office of billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman on Thursday, to protest his attacks against former Harvard University president Claudine Gay. “We have started these weekly, one-hour protests in front of Mr. Ackman's office. He has said that the resignation of Ms., Dr. Gay at Harvard is not the end of it. They're going to keep fighting to end DEI, which is diversity, equity and inclusion,” Sharpton said. “That's declaring a war on all of us — blacks, women, gays.” On Tuesday, Gay said she would resign from her position at Harvard, ending a six-month tenure marred by allegations of plagiarism and backlash over her congressional testimony about antisemitism on campus. Gay had come under pressure to resign over her comments at the Dec. 5 congressional hearing, while also facing several allegations of plagiarism for her academic work in recent months. Some of Gay's critics, including Ackman, have argued that she was chosen for the role as part of the school's effort to promote diversity rather than for her qualifications. Some right-wing activists celebrated Gay's resignation on Tuesday as a win in their mission to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion programs. WARNING: Viewer may find the contents of the video disturbing. Discretion is advised. Close family members of the Afzaals, the Muslim family murdered by Nathaniel Veltman in a vehicle attack, are sharing stories of loss, grief and pain — but also of faith and resilience at a sentencing hearing in London, Ont. Two days have been set aside for victim impact statements alone due to the sheer number of those willing to share how the acts of June 6, 2021 have changed their lives. Thursday’s proceedings involved relatives of the Afzaals, many of whom described symptoms of anxiety and depression in the wake of the attack as well as fearing for their safety and the safety of other visible minorities across Canada. The question of terrorism may be answered during the sentencing portion of the trial, as the judge may make a decision about whether the murders constitute an act of terror as part of potential aggravating factors in the case. The sentencing proceedings are being held in London, where the attack occurred, while the trial was held in Windsor, Ont. Global’s Sean O’Shea has the details. The Vancouver Police Department is rolling out its body camera pilot project. Global News is getting an early look at the body cameras some Vancouver police officers will be wearing. Const. Katie Ranger is among 84 patrol members wearing them in the coming days following training sessions. That will rise to 100 officers in the weeks ahead. As Catherine Urquhart explains, their implementation has been years in the making and follows recommendations from a high profile inquest. Prague Zoo in Czech Republic welcomed a newborn western lowland gorilla on Thursday, after 10-year-old Duni gave birth to her very first cub. The western lowland gorilla has been considered a “critically endangered” mammal by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 2016. The zoo plans to transfer the baby to a different zoo once it matures to help the threatened species breed and populate further. “The birth of the baby and the breeding of it is very important for the whole gorilla's group, because the social structure of the group is set like that,” Jan Mengr, the institution’s zookeeper said on Thursday. Health care professionals across Canada are saying Invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) could be responsible for many of the symptoms of illness many are feeling this winter. For the most part, cases of strep A are treatable — however, there can be serious risks associated with the infection, according to some experts. Infectious disease physicians say strep A can often be treated with medication, and that it is important to seek medical attention if symptoms become worse. Global’s Katherine Ward reports.
