As Denmark’s reigning monarch, Queen Margrethe II took her final ride through Copenhagen in a gold-coated horse-drawn carriage on Thursday, 10 days before she is set to pass the throne on to her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik. Crowned in 1972, serving for more than five decades, the beloved Queen Margrethe announced her intent to abdicate in her annual New Year’s Eve speech on a live television broadcast — shocking much of the nation. “She has been a stable figure,” Danish church employee Bente Lindbak Pihl said on Thursday after attending the Queen’s final carriage ride in the country’s capital. “She has been a kind of big mother for all of us. She has been clever and inspiring.” Queen Margrethe was not initially intended to become Denmark’s monarch, however, she became heir to her father, King Frederik IX, in 1953 at the age of 13, after a constitutional amendment allowed women to inherit the throne. A century-old workshop, renowned worldwide for its traditional lacquerware, lay in smouldering ruins following a devastating earthquake and fire. Kohei Kirimoto, 31, an eighth-generation lacquer artist, walked through rubble on Thursday, concerned only for his beloved cats. He put out food and water for not just the three cats that lived in his home and workspace, but also for dozens of community felines that lived in Wajima's "Asaichi" morning market, famed for its winding stalls of seafood, snacks and crafts. Wajima was hit hardest by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck central Japan on the afternoon of New Year's Day, the strongest in the country since the 2011 Fukushima disaster. As of Thursday, at least 84 people have been confirmed dead as the search for survivors continues. Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante confirmed Thursday that there were “multiple gunshot victims” following a shooting at Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, on Thursday morning but said the total number of injured was “still unclear.” Sheriff Infante said the shooting happened before classes had started and as a result “very few students and faculty” were in the building. The shooting at Perry High School happened as students were returning for the first day back to class following the holiday break. The total extent of the injuries is still unclear. Perry is about 64 kilometres (40 miles) northwest of Des Moines. The release of dozens of previously sealed court documents from a lawsuit involving Jeffrey Epstein might disappoint online sleuths who anticipated explosive new information. The 40 documents released late Wednesday largely mention figures whose names were already known, including high-profile friends of Epstein's and victims who have spoken publicly. In fact, the judge who made the call last month to release the information said she was doing so largely because much of it is already public.
