Quebec could be seeing the beginning of the end of a long-lasting labour conflict between the province and hundreds of thousands of public sector workers. After weeks of striking, the provincial government and a major teachers’ union had a breakthrough at the bargaining table. The Federation autonome de l’enseignement (FAE), which represents some 66,000 teachers, has reached a tentative deal with the province over collective agreements late Wednesday. They’ve reached a consensus regarding working conditions and salaries, according to the offices of Treasury Board Chair Sonia LeBel and Education Minister Bernard Drainville. The family of the only Canadian citizen who was still missing after Hamas militants conducted a brutal assault on Israel has confirmed her death. A relative says Judih Weinstein Haggai died on Oct. 7, the day of the attacks that killed an estimated 1,200 people, and her body is being held in the Gaza Strip. The 70-year-old woman’s family says she held Canadian, Israeli and American citizenships. Weinstein Haggai was born in New York state but moved to Toronto at the age of three, and moved to Israel 20 years later to live with her husband. She lived in the Nir Oz kibbutz, and was a volunteer who helped Palestinians in Gaza. The conflict has already killed more than 20,000 Palestinians, according to local authorities, and driven about 85 per cent of the Gaza Strip’s population of 2.3 million people from their homes. Global’s Sean O’Shea has the details. Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who conspired with her online ex-boyfriend to kill her mother, has been released from prison. Gypsy, now 32, was originally handed a 10-year sentence after she encouraged her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to kill Clauddine (Dee Dee) Blanchard in June 2015. On Thursday, after serving over eight years behind bars, Gypsy walked free. She left the Chillicothe Correctional Centre in Missouri around 3:30 a.m. local time, according to a regional Fox affiliate news station. There was little fanfare, and Gypsy was not seen as she exited. She was granted parole in September after serving 85 per cent of her original sentence. A balmy winter has taken Canada by storm, with people across the country dealing with a warmer holiday season — and resulting in tragedies where people have fallen through ice in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. The Lifesaving Society says while most drownings take place during summer months, about a third of them happen between October and May. On Thursday, daily highs across the country hovered near freezing or above zero. For outdoor winter recreational activities on frozen rivers, lakes, and ponds to be considered safe, sustained freezing conditions are required. “It is from coast to coast to coast. Canadians have the same question. Where is winter?” Environment & Climate Change Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips said. Global’s Kyle Benning has more. One teenager is dead and another is missing after four teens fell through the ice on the Rideau River in the south Ottawa suburb of Manotick on Wednesday night. According to police, the two teens, aged 16 and 17 years old, were missing and believed to be in the water. The police marine unit and fire crews began to search the area and found the body of one of the missing teens. First responders are still searching for the second missing teenager. The service says that two of the other teenagers, a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy were able to get themselves out of the river before they arrived.
