WARNING: Video contains violent content that may not be suitable for all viewers. Discretion is advised. A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed by her 14-year-old brother during a “domestic altercation” over Christmas presents, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. The shooting took place on Christmas Eve in Largo, a city in the Tampa Bay, Fla., area. The incident involved 23-year-old Abrielle Baldwin, a mother of two and the victim of the shooting, and her two brothers Damarcus Coley, 14, and Darcus Coley, 15. According to the Pinellas police, the three siblings went Christmas shopping on Sunday along with their mother and Baldwin’s 11-month-old and six-year-old sons. “So they had this family spat about who was getting what, and what money was being spent on who, and they’re having this big thing going on in the store and they’re all arguing with each other,” Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said in a Tuesday press conference. After leaving the store, the family reportedly headed to their grandmother’s house and Damarcus started arguing with his brother and then sister, threatening to shoot her and the baby. The 14-year-old then shot Baldwin, with the bullet going through her left arm and into her chest. The baby was unharmed. Olympic bobsledder Ralph Pichler, 69, is counting his blessings this Christmas, having triumphed over a harrowing battle with heart failure a little over two years ago. Pichler, a two-time world champion bobsledder, was diagnosed with heart failure in December 2021 during a visit to the University Health Network’s (UHN) Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto. At the time he was given two options: palliative care or a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), also known as a mechanical heart. Pichler opted for the latter, telling Global News that his organs were shutting down and was told he had little time left to live. Remarkably, just 12 days after his surgery on Dec. 10, 2021, he was back home recovering with his loved ones. Now, two years later, as this holiday season unfolds, Pichler finds himself surrounded by the warmth of family, a new granddaughter named Emma, and the gentle hum of the mechanical heart that became his lifeline. As Global’s Katherine Ward explains, the doctors who saved his life hope they can find ways to make the technology he uses even more efficient.
