Australia grappled with the aftermath of deadly thunderstorms on Wednesday that uprooted trees, damaged buildings and left tens of thousands without power after it battered the country’s east over the Christmas season. At least nine people were killed across the country after severe thunderstorms lashed the states of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland on Monday and Tuesday, bringing large hailstones and torrential rains. Strong winds blew off roofs and brought down trees in some of the worst-affected areas. The youngest victim was a nine-year-old girl found after she was swept away in a flooded stormwater drain. Lee Sun-kyun, a popular South Korean actor best known for his role in the Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” was found dead in a car in Seoul on Wednesday, authorities said, after weeks of an intense police investigation into his alleged drug use. He was 48. Police and emergency officers initially found Lee in what they believed was an unconscious state in the car parked on a street in northern Seoul. Emergency officers later confirmed he was dead, according to Seoul’s Seongbuk police station. Police had been searching for Lee after receiving a report that he was missing.
