A makeshift memorial was erected in southwest Calgary to pay tribute to one of the two people found dead inside a home late last week. An unknown person placed candles, flowers and a photograph of Capt. Christina Thomson, a WestJet pilot, on the house’s stairs. The WestJet Master Executive Council of the Airline Pilots Association, the union representing WestJet pilots, issued a statement to Global News on Tuesday confirming Thomson’s death. “Words cannot begin to describe the sense of devastation, grief, and profound loss which now envelops the WestJet pilot group, with the tragic passing of Captain Christina Thomson,” Capt. Bernard Lewall said in the statement. “Not only was Capt. Thomson a first-rate aviator, but she was also known as a driven and strong leader serving as a role model for younger women in aviation. Her life will leave an indelible mark on all those fortunate to have met her.” The nature of Thomson’s death as well as the cause of death of the unidentified man have not been released but Calgary Police Service investigators say both are considered suspicious. Autopsies were scheduled to take place Tuesday. Global's Tomasia DaSilva reports. Amazon offered a behind-the-scenes look at how artificial intelligence is used at its YEG2 fulfilment centre in Acheson, west of Edmonton in Parkland County. The last few weeks of December are busy ones at Amazon warehouses as the company works to fulfil millions of customer orders. And it’s using AI to help. “This is the busiest part of the year,” explained Suresh Kumar, general manager of Amazon YEG2. “We call it holiday peak season. During this period, we ship close to 700,000 units every day, which is close to 600 packages every minute.” “This is one of the most technologically advanced fulfilment centres in North America. It’s an Amazon robotics facility,” Kumar added. “We have over 5,000 robotic drives and we have 25 robotic arms which work alongside our associates to pack and ship packages faster.” Global's Sarah Ryan has the details. There are renewed calls for a change to Canada's immigration policy, as the country's population growth continues to soar. From this July to September, Canada came close to breaking the highest population growth rate in any quarter, when it reported 430,635 new residents in the country. Statistics Canada reported Tuesday the population increase, which reflected a 1.1-per cent growth rate in the third quarter of 2023. That was the highest population growth rate since the second quarter of 1957, when Canada’s population grew by 198,000 people, or 1.2 per cent. Housing affordability, meanwhile, hit its worst level in more than four decades last quarter, the Bank of Canada said last week. At current building levels, the Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation predicts Canada will be short 3.5 million homes, in addition to what’s currently being built, to restore housing affordability by 2030. Global’s Sean O'Shea has the details.
