In a video released by Hamas on Tuesday, senior official Basem Naem said the militant group is affirming its position of “rejecting to hold any form of negotiations over prisoners exchange under the continuing Israeli genocidal war,” adding that they are “open to any initiatives that contribute to ending the aggression” on Gaza. In the video address, Naem emphasized the suffering Palestinians have endured for 74 days in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict — which was triggered by Hamas’s unprecedented attack in south Israel on Oct. 7, and the killing of 1,200 people. Since Israel’s retaliatory military operation — which began on the same day, with a vow to destroy Hamas — more than 19,000 people have been killed in Gaza, and over 52,000 more injured, according to local health officials. Naem accused the U.S. of being “accountable” for the ongoing war on Gaza. “The U.S. administration is complicit in these Israeli crimes, which wouldn’t have happened without such shameful American cover and support,” he claimed. In the last few weeks, Israel has faced intensifying pressures to commit to a ceasefire in Gaza and stop the violence. Naem expressed thanks to those partaking in pro-Palestinian protests across the globe, encouraging people to “keep pressuring” Israel for a ceasefire. “They bet on your fatigue, prove that they are wrong,” the Hamas senior said. Pope Francis has formally approved allowing priests to bless same-sex couples, with a new document explaining a radical change in Vatican policy by insisting that people seeking God’s love and mercy shouldn’t be subject to “an exhaustive moral analysis” to receive it. The document from the Vatican’s doctrine office, released Monday, elaborates on a letter Francis sent to two conservative cardinals that was published in October. In that preliminary response, Francis suggested such blessings could be offered under some circumstances if they didn’t confuse the ritual with the sacrament of marriage. Religious leaders reacted to the news, saying the decision was made because the Vatican is "listening to the needs of the people," and while it's a step in the right direction, there are still "miles to go" for LGBTQ+ rights in the Church. Canada's federal government is expected to announce in Toronto, Ont., on Tuesday that all new cars sold in Canada must have zero emissions as of 2035, as the Trudeau government is set to unveil new regulations in the latest example of countries around the world pushing for electrification. The Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Quebec already have the same regulated sales targets. Zero-emission vehicles – which include battery electric, plug-in and hydrogen models – must represent 20 per cent of all new car sales in 2026, 60 per cent in 2030 and 100 per cent in 2035, a government source told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Global EV sales now make up about 13 per cent of all vehicle sales and are likely to rise to between 40-45 per cent of the market by the end of the decade, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA). An Alberta woman is seeking justice after she says her mother’s life was “taken” by a romance scam. Chantel Westguard says her mother was conned by several people involved in an elaborate and long-lasting romance scam, including a man claiming to be a U.S. sergeant, who contacted her mother online. Jarmila Westguard, 74, ended up homeless and hospitalized as a result of the scam and eventually died on Oct. 14, her daughter said. Westguard says at one point her mother tried to send an envelope with $36,000 in cash across the border but the payment was stopped and her mother was fined. “These people took everything from my mother,” she says. Tomasia DaSilva has more on this tragic story and the uptick in romance and investment scams in Canada.
