Israeli media report the Israeli army has withdrawn from the western portion of Khan Younis city in the southern Gaza Strip. “The 98th Division, with its three brigades, withdrew from Khan Younis last night after the end of the operation there after fighting that lasted four months,” Army Radio reported. Only one brigade is left in Gaza, the Nahal Brigade, which is responsible for securing the corridor established by the Israeli army to prevent displaced Gaza people from returning to the north, it added. Palestinian sources told Anadolu news agency Israeli forces retreated from all western areas of Khan Younis city but they remained stationed in the east. “As of this stage of the manoeuvre, the Israeli army completed its operation in Khan Younis and soldiers have completed their exit from there,” Israel’s Channel 12 said. “Forces consisting of four different brigades are now stationed in the humanitarian corridor and in the northern Gaza Strip in the Beit Hanoon area.” Al Jazeera's Rory Challands has the latest in the occupied East Jerusalem. South Africa has highlighted the Rwanda genocide during its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. It says the international community failed to prevent the atrocities from being committed back in 1994 and warns history should not be repeated. Al Jazeera’s Victoria Gatenby reports. Charles Petrie is Former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and United Nation's Deputy Coordinator in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. He says it was the Security Council that failed Rwanda, they did this deliberately. The plane was shot down 2 weeks after the last American/UN troops left the shores of Mogadishu in total humiliation. There was no appetite to get involved in Rwanda. The US then said they would only intervene in foreign wars only for matters of US interest. Warning: Some of the contents in this video contains some distressing images. A ceremony is getting underway in Rwanda to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide. In just 100 days, Hutu militias killed more than 800 thousand people, mostly from the ethnic Tutsi minority, as well as Hutu moderates. It was triggered by the assassination of the Hutu president Juvenal Habyarimana. Hutus accused Tutsi rebels from the Rwandan Patriotic Front of shooting down his plane. The group denied involvement. Between April and July, Hutu militias and elements within the Rwandan army slaughtered Tutsis and political opponents. The killings finally stopped on July the 4th when the Rwandan Patriotic Front, backed by Uganda’s army, captured the capital, Kigali. Nizireye Yohana's mother was a Tutsi and his father was a Hutu. He was 30 years old when he says Hutu forces made him kill Tutsis. Nizireye was jailed for 15 years by grassroots courts formed to serve justice in local communities after the genocide. Mireille Abewe is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. She says finding reconciliation is an ongoing process.
