Over the past 20 years, religious organisations from the Catholic Church to Jehovah’s Witnesses have had a reckoning with cases of child sexual abuse. Many states have tried to tackle the abuse by making clergy mandatory reporters of abuse to officials, just like doctors, therapists and teachers are. However, more than 30 states in the United States do not require church officials to report knowledge or allegations of child abuse if the information is deemed privileged, specifically coming from confession or counselling. It means that abuse can all too often be hidden - and survivors are left without recourse or justice. The hold-up has quite frankly been the United States. The US is clearly not satisfied with the original draft resolution that was circulated on Friday, which called for a "cessation of hostilities." The wording was requested to be changed, and it was altered to "suspension of hostilities," indicating a less permanent term. Behind closed doors, it has been the US that is believed to have continued to request changes and modifications. At some point, the other members of the Security Council, primarily the United Arab Emirates, which drafted and is essentially sponsoring this resolution, have to either agree to continue delays or not. It is now believed that there will be a vote within the next hour or two in the Security Council. At that point, the outcome will be revealed. However, it has been conveyed by two diplomatic sources that the US has not taken off the table the option to veto. Peter Rademaker, Deputy Regional Director for Arab states at the International Labour Organization (ILO), has told Al Jazeera from Geneva that Palestinians in Gaza “will be in poverty for many months and years to come” because of Israel’s war on the enclave. “The labour market was already very depressed in the occupied West Bank and Gaza even before the war. In Gaza, unemployment was sky-high because of years of the blockade. So, we started from a very difficult situation,” he said. “[As the war goes on,] many people in Gaza and also West Bank will have no income, no wages.
