The National Sea Rescue Institute records 56 drowning incidents per year, while rip currents are linked to over 10,000 drownings worldwide. Now the South African weather service, Stellenbosch University and rescue emergency services have collaborated to create a rip current hazard forecast model. The defense in the historic case against two apartheid security officers, has argued that the pair cannot be put on trial because the alleged crimes took place more than 20 years ago. On 15 February 1982, four young students from Kagiso were blown up by members of the apartheid police. Eustice Madikela, Ntshingo Mataboge and Fanyana Nhlapo were killed. Zandisile Musi was seriously injured. Former police officer Christiaan Rorich and askari Tlhomedi Mfalapitsa are facing charges of kidnapping, murder and crimes against humanity. eNCA Senior reporter Silindelo Masikane has more details. The trial of three former apartheid police officers for the murder of a student activist, Caiphus Nyoka, in 1987, continued in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court. Judge Mahomed Ismail gave short shrift to the defence when they veered from the core issue of the case – the assassination of Nyoka. He cautioned one of the defence attorneys for alleging Nyoka could have been involved in sourcing weapons during his time as an activist with student body Cosas.
