Thousands of farm animals have been isolated in East London, before being shipped to the Middle East. The Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform says it has been monitoring livestock loading to ensure animals' welfare. There’s still uncertainty around the future of many non-profit organisations in Gauteng and the children, elderly, and other vulnerable people they care for. The Gauteng Department of Social Department’s funding decisions for the new financial year were delayed, leaving many organisations unable to plan. This has led to at least 18 NPOs announcing they have to close or will have to do so if their applications are not successful. The funding was meant to kick in on 1 April. Lisa Vetten of the Gauteng Care Crisis Committee, which is a voluntary association of 67 non-profit organisations, spoke with eNCA. The Basic Education Department is giving the new General Education Certificate for grade nines a full trial run. The certificate is to be introduced next year. It will give pupils who leave school after grade nine a standardised qualification that can serve as a valuable asset for employment or further education. Eskom’s entry into the competitive electricity market is now underway, after it met all requirements to form a merger with the National Transmission Company of South Africa. The NTCSA will now be a separate subsidiary of Eskom Holdings, according to the Companies Act. This means Eskom will be legally separated into Generation, Distribution, and Transmission units, with aims of improving electricity supply. Eskom chairperson Mteto Nyati discussed this with eNCA. In January, Gauteng Education appointed an independent law firm to investigate the drowning of 12 year-old Latoya Termilton. The Learskool Queenswood pupil died while under school supervision.
