A cholera outbreak is sweeping Zambia, Zimbabwe, and parts of Southern Africa. Unicef says this is the worst outbreak to hit the region in years. As of Monday, 3,000 deaths and more than 2,500 cases have been reported. From Nairobi, Kenya Unicef Health Regional Health advisor, Paul Ngwakum spoke with eNCA. Universities South Africa has warned that a new student loan policy could overwhelm the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Until now NSFAS has been paying grants to poorer students to fund their studies. Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande announced earlier it would start to provide loans to students from households with an annual income above R350,000 and R600,000 but who still cannot afford their studies – the missing middle. Dealing with cross-border cholera contamination is one of the government's major priorities. Two men who travelled to Zimbabwe in December tested positive for cholera in Limpopo. Frustrations are mounting in the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy due to a backlog of more than 2,500 mining applications. The applications were received in the 2023/2024 financial year. This information was revealed by DMRE Minister Gwede Mantashe in parliament last year. At the same time, there are growing calls for artisanal mining licences to be issued to South Africans living in mining communities. The DA in KwaZulu-Natal has expressed concern over the high number of matric final examination cheating cases in the province. 763 cases were reported there. Quality Assurer, uMalusi is still concerned about cheating in exams. On Monday, the education watchdog gave an update on the 2023 matric exams.
