Just over 100 of the inmates who were released on a special remission programme, are in trouble once again. The program which was designed to deal with overcrowding, saw 16,000 inmates released. The South African Union of Students says it wants the NSFAS board dissolved and Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande axed. It follows a report and audio recordings released by Outa in which Nzimande and NSFAS chairperson, Ernest Khoza, allegedly discuss millions of rand in kickbacks from the fund. The Justice Minister has reopened the inquiry into the deaths of apartheid-era activists, the Cradock Four. Matthew Goniwe, Sparrow Mkonto, Fort Calata, and Sicelo Mhlauli were abducted and killed in 1985. Oscar Pistorius is now at home as a parolee after he was released on Friday. It comes nearly 11 years after he murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day in 2013. He’s spent around eight years behind bars. He was sentenced to nearly 13 and a half years in 2016 after a judgment of culpable homicide was changed to murder by a higher court. But under South African law, all offenders are entitled to be considered for parole once they have served half their total sentence.
