After 30 years of democracy in South Africa and elections on the way, some students feel left behind. The South African Union of Students says it notes with irritation the inability of NSFAS to effectively fulfill its mandate to the poor. NSFAS provides grants for students to pay for their tuition and accommodation but living allowances to hundreds of thousands of students were not paid on time last year. 2024 is going to be a big year for democracy in South Africa, with provincial and national elections set to take place. Can a scandal around a singing competition provide lessons for voters who will choose a new government? A UJ academic says it does. Ukhozi FM’s Song of the Year has raised the ire of listeners and music fans after the Maskandi musician, Khuzani featuring Umjolo Lowo won the contest over and above other songs that were arguably more popular. Umjolo Lowo received nearly 1 million votes from Ukhozi FM listeners while iPlan which topped the charts at Metro FM received 90,000. Many were shocked at the result. Vusi Gumbi, a researcher at the Institute for Pan African Thought and Conversation at the University of Johannesburg, discussed this with eNCA. South Africa and other countries neighboring Zimbabwe are stepping up efforts to combat cholera given an outbreak in that country. Zimbabwe has declared a state of emergency and there were around 250 suspected cholera deaths last year. The number of people killed has risen rapidly over the festive season. South Africa’s health department is concerned there will be a spread of the disease across the border with some Zimbabweans returning to their homes in South Africa. Teenage pregnancy is a global problem with clearly defined drivers that fuel the social phenomenon. However, South Africa’s teenage pregnancy rate remains one of the highest in the world. Tax Justice SA says it welcomes a vital legal breakthrough against illicit tobacco traders stealing billions of rand from South Africa. Several cigarette manufacturers have failed in their urgent bid to interdict the SA Revenue Service against installing CCTV cameras at their warehouses. Now these companies - including Carnilinx, which is owned by self-confessed tobacco smuggler Adriano Mazzotti - will be monitored to determine the true volume of cigarettes they produce. Eskom has completed a successful full load-rejection test on Koeberg's Unit 1. The power utility says this was the final test required following the installation of new steam generators.
