Fun in the sun is the order of the day as holidaymakers soak up the last days of 2023. The beach is one of the all-time favourites for South Africans, and with such a variety in the Western Cape there's plenty to choose from. But as we know, the ocean has an ugly side, since the beginning of this month three people have drowned in that province. The National Sea Rescue Institute in the Western Cape says these drownings can be avoided and is urging beachgoers to respect advice from lifesavers and be cautious. eNCA reporter Nobesuthu Hejana gave an update from Sea Point. This year's Christmas brought some heavy downpours in Gauteng, making it difficult to move around. Localised flooding forced authorities to close some roads. More rain is expected on Tuesday. Families are losing hope as the search for their missing loved ones isn't yielding any positive results. Parts of Ladysmith, are currently under water due to last night's heavy rainfall. So far six people have been confirmed dead, and eleven are missing. The local SPCA and Caravan Park are among the flooded areas and the victims were reportedly near the park adjacent to an overflowing stream. The South African Weather Services in KwaZulu-Natal has issued a Level 2 warning for various parts of the province, effective from Monday and extending into Tuesday. Cape Town Fire and Rescue services are urging the public to exercise caution as wildfire flare-ups continue. On Sunday afternoon, firefighters responded to a vegetation fire along the R27 near Melkbosstrand. Last week crews battled to contain fires that had been raging in Simon's Town and Glencairn. Wildfires in the Western Cape have killed scores of snakes, lizards and tortoises. The fire spread quickly into Table Mountain National Park and swept across thousands of hectares in the south peninsula since Tuesday.
