Conflicts between refugees and host communities have erupted in Western Uganda over food insecurity. The local communities accused the refugees of stealing food from their gardens following the reduction in funding for refugees from United Nations. This was revealed during the fact-finding mission by Members of Parliament on the Presidential Affairs Committee in the region.
The State Minister for Internal Affairs David Muhoozi says the process of registration of finger printing of firearms that was introduced to aid tracing of criminality is in the final stages. While opening the first ever seminar on the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons, he noted that Uganda as a country has registered commendable strides in fighting firearm criminality.

The new board of the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) outlined an ambitious plan to revitalize and transform the organization's assets, with a particular focus on its landed properties and outdated equipment. The initiative aims to leverage these assets to generate economic viability and alleviate operational pressures. This has been disclosed by the Acting Chair Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Ibrahim Makoma at their visit at Nakasongola and Tajda Mityana to assess the functionality of UBC radios and TV.
Members of Parliament, cabinet ministers, and religious leaders have supported the president on the issue of taking action against corrupt individuals in public service and parliament, saying this is when the public will believe in the government. The president, during his state of the nation address in Kololo, said he will take action on the corrupt through dishonesty, acting as foreign agents, and people who make mistakes. Some MPs noted that dishonesty could be disguised as mistakes, so the levels need to be measured and leveled. Other issues reacted to include the extortion by money lenders through charging high-interest rates.

A Kampala businessman, Farouk Mujumba, has taken the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to the Commercial Division of the High Court, seeking compensation of an estimated 2 billion shillings in damages arising from a demolition exercise in which he alleges that kiosks were destroyed. As Betty Ndagire reports, a hearing for the case has been set after the duo failed to resolve the matter out of court. Today, after seven years, the High Court's International Crimes Division has fixed a date to hear witness accounts in the murder of former police officer Andrew Felix Kaweesi. Kaweesi was shot dead in March 2017 as he left his home in Kampala, in the company of his driver and a bodyguard. Eight people were arrested, and accused of coordinating and carrying out the murder. They were charged with terrorism, murder, and aggravated robbery of a pistol. Despite being arrested in 2017, the accused persons’ charges were only confirmed on 16th April this year in a pre-trial hearing by Justice Alice Komuhangi. Six of the eight suspects are out on bail while one is on the run. An assessment by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, a global body that promotes the open and accountable management of oil, gas, and mineral resources, shows that Uganda still lacks contract transparency in the extractives industry, has not implemented beneficial ownership disclosures, provided accurate export data for gold and the mining sector, disclosed and ensured direct payments, among other issues. Finance Minister Matia Kasaija has signed a framework agreement for a $500 million loan from Korea Exim Bank, financing under the Economic Development Cooperation Fund. The Minister was flanked by the South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Cho Tae-yul, on the sidelines of the First Korea-Africa Summit, which concluded yesterday in Seoul. They are now requesting government support through the land fund to help them acquire the land where they have lived for decades. The affected families and businesses in Acholi Quarters, Bbanda “B”, Kireka “D” Kiganda, and Kasokoso villages are facing eviction threats from the National Housing Cooperation and Kireka Estates since 2014.
