When it was first announced that Nebbi Diocese would host this year’s Uganda Martyrs' Day celebrations, many thoughts immediately went to Bishop Raphael p’Mony Wokorach leading the way to Namugongo. However, this year, when he leads the pilgrims from Nebbi Diocese, it may also be his last time as prelate of Nebbi. That is because Pope Francis has appointed him as the incoming Archbishop of Gulu, and his installation is due later this year. For now, he is focused on plans for Uganda Martyrs' Day in Namugongo, scheduled for June 3, 2024. The Archbishop-elect of the Gulu Ecclesiastical Province, Raphael Wokorach, has called for more efforts to protect the values of the Uganda Martyrs to avoid negatively impacting the Namugongo shrine. Hundreds of pilgrims flocking to Namugongo to celebrate Martyrs' Day are fetching water, believed to have healing powers, from a man-made lake at the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine. Reverend Father Vincent Lubega, the parish priest of Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, assures that the water is safe and holy, urging pilgrims to use it with faith.
As pilgrims continue to flock to the Anglican martyrs' site, the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for the D-Day, Rt. Rev. Ruben Kisembo, has advised those planning to attend prayers to carry their National Identification to avoid any potential issues. According to Bishop Kisembo, preparations at the Anglican site are currently at 80% completion for the Martyrs Day on 3rd June.
