Air pollution levels in Kampala City are about eight times higher than the recommended standards. The new National Environment Air-Quality Standards Regulations of 2024 have set heavy fines and jail terms for those found guilty of polluting the air. According to the National Environment Management Authority - NEMA - nearly 31,000 people die every year from diseases caused by prolonged exposure to air pollution. The State Minister for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, has hailed the progress in improving opportunities for marine transport, particularly in enhancing business across Lake Victoria. Gen. Wilson Mbadi says the M.V. Mpungu, a one-thousand-metric-tonnes cargo ferry that will operate from Port Bell in Uganda all the way to Mwanza in Tanzania, is yet to be commissioned to boost Uganda's trade engagement with neighboring countries. The Commander of the Fisheries Protection Unit, Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, has assured fish traders at the Mpondwe Lhubiriha border in Kasese district that the fish market will soon return to Uganda from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Lt. Col. Tukahirwa made this announcement while meeting traders at the Mpondwe Lhubiriha Border Market, following the outcry of women involved in the fish trade at the border.
If it wasn't for unnecessary bickering by Kanungu District District Leaders, more development initiatives would have been extended to the People. This was decried by ICT and National Guidance Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi whose efforts in extending electric power, health services and education have been lauded. This was during the launch of Nyekundire Group of Kanaaba Sub County where Baryomunsi who is also area Member of Parliament for Kinkizi East pledged more development initiatives for the area.
The Deputy Inspector General of Government, Patricia Achan Okiria has urged youth to be ethical and join the fight against corruption. This was in Lira during the Rotaract Club Northern Cluster fellowship. Dr. Achan also appealed to leaders to unite and support institutions that are in a sorry state.
Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, is set to construct regional museums and heritage sites to create more tourism attractions and boost the country's tourism sector. At the Soroti Regional Museum launch, Uganda's Vice President affirmed the government's commitment to partnering with the private sector to develop untapped tourism heritage sites.
The framework for Islamic banking was officially established in 2016 when the Ugandan parliament passed amendments to the Financial Institutions Act to allow for Sharia-compliant banking. However, despite the legislative groundwork laid in 2016, practical implementation took several more years seeing participation grow, evidenced by the entry of varying tier institutions like Thiqa Digital Finance in 2019. KCCA Leopards edged the A1 Challenge Basketball Club 59 to 43 points in one of the National Basketball League games played today at the YMCA Court in Wandegeya. Perus Nyamwenge was the star of the game, contributing a game-high 24 points, two rebounds, and two assists. On the side of A1 Challenge, Stella Kiberenge stood out with 13 points, followed by Faith Apio with 10 points. Uganda Cancer Institute has received latest advanced machine for Cancer Treatment in the region that will handle mild side effects. The state–of-art Linear accelerator machine has treated more than 680 patients since last year. With Support from Roche, it has optimized work flow and capacity for East African Centre of excellence in oncology and has set up a National Reference Laboratory.
The Minister of Gender Labour and Social Development Betty Amongi has noted with concern the manner in which majority of women are not economically empowered despite the numerous government interventions. Amongi said women have made significant progress in politics and leadership unlike in the business sector.
