According to the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), 58% of products on the market are either fake or counterfeit, and sadly, many of these are locally made. Tens of thousands of brands have been impacted not only through the theft of sales and the dilution of hard-fought reputations but also through consumer confusion. Counterfeits cut across sectors and pose serious health and safety risks, inhibiting Uganda’s economic growth as potential investors defer from doing business in a nation where they believe that their products will be widely forged. In a significant move aimed at safeguarding intellectual property rights, fostering fair competition, and ensuring consumer safety, the Ugandan government has passed the Anti-Counterfeit Goods Bill. This comprehensive legislation represents a pivotal step towards addressing the pervasive issue of counterfeit and substandard products that have plagued the Ugandan market for years. What impact does it have against the fight? Counsel Fred Muwema, a lawyer, and Jonathan Ebwalu, Member of Parliament for Soroti West, and proponent of the Bill, welcome you to the program. #NTVNews #NTVTonight #NTVWeekendEdition Subscribe to Our Channel For more news visit http://www.ntv.co.ug Follow us on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/ntvuganda Connect with us on Messenger via m.me/NTVUganda

Section 5 of the Registration of Persons Act mandates NIRA to, among other things, create, manage, maintain, and operate the National Identification Register, to register citizens of Uganda, to register non-citizens of Uganda, to register births and deaths, and to assign a unique national identification number to every person registered in the national identification register. This extensive exercise not only aims to renew all National ID cards issued between 2014 and 2015, which are nearing the end of their 10-year validity period but also to adopt a more comprehensive biometric system. As the fourth estate, we are obliged to track such commitments. On the program, we have Osborn Mushabe, Public Relations Manager at NIRA, and Ivan Otim, Programs & Monitoring & Evaluation Officer at African Youth Development Link. #NTVNews #NTVTonight #NTVWeekendEdition Subscribe to Our Channel For more news visit http://www.ntv.co.ug Follow us on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/ntvuganda Connect with us on Messenger via m.me/NTVUganda
