President Yoweri Museveni has cautioned people frustrating Atiak sugar factory project in Amuru District. Museveni who was on field visit to assess the current state of the multi-billion shillings sugar project implemented under a public private partnership, noted that those frustrating the project are opposing industrialization and thus they are enemies of Uganda and Africa.

Dolphins Swim Club have today been crowned champions for the tenth edition of their organised Dolphins Junior Swimming Championships that started yesterday at Llori Park Swimming Pool in Kyebando. The two-day event has attracted 20 clubs including six from Kenya. Two of the four Buganda Royal Institute students who perished in a car crash in Entebbe yesterday have been laid to rest at their respective ancestral homes in Masaka and Mpigi District. The National Resistance Movement party NRM has revealed that the party now has 18.3 million members. This follows the recent registration exercise of party members, which was concluded last month. The party Spokesperson Emmanuel Dombo says there has been an increase in the number of party members from 10.7 million to 18.3 million, meaning 7.6 million new members joined the party. Stanley Tamale and Albert Kimumwe have scored for Kampala Hockey Club who target top positions in the league this season. Luweero Secondary School Deputy Headteacher in charge of academics, Grace Nnamubiru Kironde, has urged students who dislike sports to re-consider because all forms of sports are an important aspect of learning in the new competence-based curriculum for Lower Secondary Education. Ms. Nnamubiru made the call while addressing students who attended the school’s Thanksgiving service following their football team’s lifting of this year’s Uganda Senior Secondary schools Sports Association Greater Luweero regional football tournament.

Residents of greater Luweero have been called upon to embrace Pineapple growing through cooperatives as one way of curbing household poverty. The call was made by the director of Dennis Consults Limited, Solomon Kagaba, during a one-day seminar for pineapple farmers in Greater Luweero. Mr. Kagaba highlighted the common farming and market challenges faced by individual farmers, and stressed the need for cooperative movements in order to effectively address thwese challenges.

Kyambogo University has decried the high bar set for graduates to penetrate into the engineering industry as many would-be potential employers are seeking for much experience while others want internationally recognized certificates. Busia District has registered a total number of around 180 cases of infection with a contagious red eye disease (conjunctivitis) in the villages of Lwaniha, Buhayenje, Mapedo, Mudondo, Bujunula and Bumalakani in masaba parish, masaba Sub County in Busia District. It is now three weeks since this contagious red eye disease started in the village of Lwaniha, in the house of a one, Ouma Patrick, and has since gone on to spread to various villages, parishes and sub counties.

The Directorate of Public Prosecution has, on several occasions, advocated for enactment of the witness protection Act. With the absence of the witness protection Act, the DPPs office has cited delays and challenges in prosecuting cases, especially those which are capital in nature, international and organised crimes, among others. And as we hear from our reporter, Deborah Namamonde, with the empowerment of the criminal justice system, legal minds say there's no need to enact the Witness Protection Act in prosecution and handling of cases.

Schools in the Busoga region have launched a national schools girls' debate with the aim of giving girl children confidence so they can speak about what they go through in their families and communities. Over 10 schools held a debate yesterday, where girls discussed parliamentary democracy and presidential democracy to determine which system is best. Students say that such debates are very beneficial for their careers. The government is looking to scale up an initiative by teachers to improve the learning of sciences under the lower secondary revised curriculum. Innovators under Science Teaching and Innovation Africa have developed cost-effective and easy-to-use laboratories for schools. The laboratory aides also come with the lower secondary competence-based kit that allows learners to acquire knowledge or learn, even if they are not supported by teachers. The Uganda Cancer Institute says the Northern Regional Cancer Institute will start full operation in June this year. Construction of the thirty-billion-shilling facility, located in Gulu City, started in August 2021. Authorities say works now stand at ninety percent.
