The prison service has released Mathew Kanyamunyu after he served three years and five months in jail. Kanyamunyu was initially sentenced to five years and one month in prison for unintentionally killing social worker Kenneth Akena in 2016. His charge was later reduced from murder to manslaughter by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Dr. Godwin Ayesiga, the training manager at the Uganda National Meteorological Authority, addressed a disaster management meeting in Entebbe on Thursday, emphasizing that disasters can be managed with proper planning and adherence to warning systems. A UGX 37 billion biomass plant, aimed at reducing carbon emissions in Uganda, has been launched. Uganda Breweries Limited is behind the project. Energy and Mineral Development Minister Ruth Nankabirwa, who presided over the launch, says the project has come at the right time. Kampala Capital City Authority is set to launch a new waste recycling initiative in Mukono Ddudu come July 2024. The initiative aims to transform organic solid waste from markets and plastic waste from the public into revenue-generating products. The Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, disclosed this information while accepting donated dustbins from investors. These dustbins will assist in managing the escalating levels of solid waste in the city.
The first Deputy Prime Minister for East African Affair Uganda Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has urged the South Sudan government to speed up the process of joining the East African Customs Union which is the mandatory body for all the member states. She siad this is affecting the promotion of economic growth and increase in trade between S. Sudan and Uganda Despite all being member states of the East African community. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga says the absence of South Sudan in the customs Union, despite being a member of the East African community is affecting the smooth operation of both customs and immigration service at Elegu border point.
The six member countries that utilize the Kenya Maritime port of Mombasa, including Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, DRC, South Sudan, and Burundi, are running out of time to meet their climate change Paris Agreement commitments to reduce carbon emissions from about 3000 trucks passing through the region daily. According to Omae Nyarandi, the executive director of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority, despite some developments in the transport sector, the region is being held back by poor infrastructure along the corridor.
