The Uganda table tennis association 2023/24 national leagues have climaxed with action at the MTN Arena Lugogo.
Namibia's President Hage Geingob has died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek. Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba announced that Mr Geingob had died in the early hours of Sunday morning. The 82-old leader had been diagnosed with cancer and revealed his diagnosis to the public last month. His office announced he would be travelling to the US for treatment, but would return to Namibia on 2 February. Mr Geingob became president in 2015 and was serving his second and final term in office. He underwent an aortic operation last year, and in 2014 he revealed that he had survived prostate cancer. Namibia is due to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in November.

A total number of one hundred forty members of the Forum for Democratic change- FDC and National Unity Platform-NUP in Bukonzo county East in Kasese district have crossed over to the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party. They cite Government’s role in bringing different projects nearer to them, and the peace and security the country is enjoying as their major reasons for the cross over. These new NRM party members were received by the NRM Chairperson, Kasese district, Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, at Cardinal Nsubuga memorial secondary school in Munkunyu Sub County.
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, with logistical support from the United Nations Support Office in Somalia, has completed Phase Two drawdown, which involved reducing the troop Count by 3000 soldiers. ATMIS transferred seven Forward Operating Bases to the Federal Government of Somalia and closed two others.
Locals in the Elgon region are concerned about the rising number of teenage mothers that have led to a significant dropout of teenage girls from school. Some of the sub-counties there have more than two hundred cases of teenage mothers who are aged between thirteen and seventeen years. Brigadier Michael Kabango, Fourth Infantry Division Army Commander, asserts that refugees entering Apaa township are responsible for the violence and environmental destruction. Brig. Kabango explained that the refugees encroached in the area seeking land and forest products. He made this statement during a community engagement organized by Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, Commander of the Reserve Forces, held at Apaa Trading Centre. The meeting followed a series of violent conflicts in the area over land ownership that claimed lives.
