Uganda Airlines has reveled that it’s experiencing a pilot shortage, leading to frequency reductions on several routes. While emphasizing adherence to mandatory pilot rest hours, the airline acknowledges the operational impact and is actively seeking solutions domestically and internationally. The airline also refutes recent media reports alleging disregard for crew rest hours. The commercial court has ruled that messages shared on WhatsApp, a social media platform, between two parties regarding work amount to a contract when the work is executed. Speaking to NTV, lawyer John Musiime stated that even in the absence of a physical agreement on paper, a phone is treated as a computer. The ruling followed a case where a medical worker sued a hospital in Kampala for non-payment of services despite the absence of a formal contract. There is a growing concern that price fluctuations in the sale of sugar might exacerbate further due to discontent among sugar cane growers nationwide. They have collectively decided not to supply sugarcane to factories due to the low prices offered by the millers. Currently, out-growers in both Busoga and Bunyoro, the primary sugarcane regions, are being offered between 140,000 and 160,000 shillings per ton of cane, a rate they consider too low. Members of Parliament in the NRM Caucus have unanimously agreed to support the rationalization of government entities to conserve funds. Legislators intend to prioritize enacting legislation on this issue sector by sector in parliament, abandoning the earlier plan of an omnibus bill. Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, has cautioned people against trading on walkways and road reserves, saying it is illegal and anyone apprehended conducting any business on these gazetted areas will face the long arm of the law. Gen. Katumba says a circular has been issued to the relevant authorities for enforcement purposes, and this includes instructions on the usage of the Kampala flyover.
Police in Busia are holding two suspects on allegations of impersonation as leaders of one of the Market vendors’ Emyooga SACCO. The two, identified as David Othieno, who purported to be the SACCO chairperson, and Patrick Wandera, are both residents of Buhunya village in Buswale Sub County, Namayingo district. The duo was netted from the office of deputy RDC, Busia, in Samia Bugwe South constituency. Busia district Deputy RDC, Grace Kanuna, ordered the arrest of the duo at his office as they tried to get clearance of approval of over 10 million shillings from the traders’ SACCO. The suspects admitted being residents of Namayingo district, and not Busia, prompting the RDC to call for police to arrest the culprits. The two are still in custody at Busia Central Police Station.
Ayepei bridge which connects Pallisa and Butebo districts in eastern Uganda, has fallen into disrepair as neither district authorities claim responsibility for its maintenance. According to Ben Amukikin, the chairperson of Opweteta Sub County in Pallisa district, the dilapidated bridge has claimed four lives and injured hundreds of people in the region.

Uganda’s Finance ministers have expressed frustration with the much delayed completion of the Namanve industrial park infrastructure development project. The project was intended to contribute significantly to Uganda’s development through industrialization and creation of jobs. Uganda Law Society members have welcomed a High Court judgment that allows them to contest and elect representatives to different statutory bodies or authorities. This follows a ruling by Justice Boniface Wamala, also the Deputy head of the Civil Division of the High Court, who broke the previous practice where the Uganda Law Society reserved the right to choose members to for statutory bodies.
