Nationals Senator Matt Canavan questions how the government can “justify” the incoming Governor-General’s pay increase. The Albanese government has proposed a pay rise for the incoming Governor-General - $200,000 more than her predecessor. “The government has some questions to answer here,” Mr Canavan told Sky News Australia. “It certainly doesn’t pass the pub test. “While people are struggling to stay in their own homes, pay their bills I don’t know how we can justify such a large increase to one official.”

Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Birmingham has blasted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's response to the Coalition's nuclear policy. The Albanese government and the Coalition have gone to war over nuclear power since Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced his policy and suggested it would be more affordable than Labor’s renewables plan. "I do think that the Prime Minister's response to the Coalition's nuclear policy has been completely, completely, off the rails,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News Australia. “Albanese, rather than slapping down Labor figures who have been putting out these memes of three-eyed fish and koalas, seems to think it's all just a joke. "Well, it's not a joke. Australia relies on nuclear technologies. “There's no place for this type of petty, pathetic scare campaign that Anthony Albanese is tolerating in the Labor Party.”

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says the government must return to the “drawing board” regarding vaping regulations. The Federal Government is softening its new laws on the sale of vapes to gain the support of the Greens. “I think they need to go back to the drawing board,” Mr Canavan told Sky News Australia. “You can’t have a situation where the law changes over just a few months time – It’s not fair to Australians. “This is not the right way to go. “I think the Coalition – the Nationals Party in particular – have long argued for a legal regulated market.”

Ms Markson’s remarks come after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Mr Kean will take over from Grant King as chair of the Climate Change Authority. “Kean stands accused of being a turncoat by the Liberals after Albanese announced he would chair the Climate Change Authority,” she said. “Kean is divisive, he’s polarising, and he’s always been highly ambitious. “Now, he’s joined the enemy; team Albo.”

Sky News host Peta Credlin says the “hysteria” of the government’s attack on Opposition leader Peter Dutton is revealing amid debate over nuclear energy. Ms Credlin’s remarks come after the Coalition unveiled its long-awaited nuclear energy policy, revealing plans to construct seven reactors in locations across Australia. Ms Credlin questioned Labor’s statements on nuclear energy being dumb, uneconomic, unsafe, and would take too long. “I reckon it’s now game on for the next election and that Dutton has given himself every chance to win,” she said. “This government’s riding for a fall. Hypocrisy, thy name is Labor.”

Sky News host Chris Kenny says former prime minister Paul Keating reverted to his other well-known characteristic, which is “sharp personal abuse” when discussing the nuclear energy debate. Mr Keating has issued an explosive response to the Opposition’s nuclear energy plans, claiming it was driven by “manic denialism” of climate change. “Keating’s statement about nuclear even had an abusive heading, labelling Peter Dutton a climate denialist and peddler of danger, making him sound like a pantomime villain,” Mr Kenny said. “Really, Dutton is the first political leader, Liberal, National, Labor or Greens, to provide a plan to get to net zero that is actually plausible under proven technology, and Keating says that’s denialism? “And the abusive rant continued ... this typical Keating invective just doesn’t make sense.”

Sky News host Chris Kenny has labelled Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party “out of touch” for proposing a pay rise for incoming Governor General Samantha Mostyn. The Albanese government has proposed a $214,000 pay rise for Ms Mostyn, which would take her salary from $495,000 to $709,000. “700 grand a year, to stand around and look dignified, and put your gender and equity activism to one side, we hope – how’s that for social justice?” Mr Kenny said. “Right in the middle of a cost of living crisis.”

Sky News host Peta Credlin says Labor’s “memes” way of tackling the Coalition’s nuclear push is “childish”. “Big stories today … we have had a couple of days to let this whole nuclear policy from the Coalition sink in,” Ms Credlin said. “Labor’s response, certainly the early childish memes we saw go out on social media in the first couple of days, there has not been a real serious attempt before today.”

The Australian’s National Editor Dennis Shanahan says Labor’s stance on nuclear is “compromised” as they are pushing for nuclear subs but continuing to ban nuclear on land. “There has been some suggestion … it may not be safe, now of course, because we have got a decision which the Albanese government is pursuing, to have nuclear submarines, all of these arguments are compromised,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “They can’t say it is safe in a nuclear submarine and not safe on land.”
