Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy says there “should be a ceasefire” in Gaza. Mr Conroy told Sky News Australia that both parties need to “sit down”. “There’s been a number of peace proposals on the table over the last few weeks. “There’s suggestions there could be a further negation as soon as this week ends.” Mr Conroy joined Sky News Australia to discuss the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy says Israel is “entitled to pursue their safety of their people”. Mr Conroy told Sky News Australia that Israel’s military response to Hamas needs to be done in “accordance with the rules of war”. “We want to see it done appropriately. “With minimum casualties.” Mr Conroy joined Sky News Australia to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen says the use of nuclear energy in Australia is a “fantasy”. Mr Bowen told Sky News Australia that nuclear energy is “slow to roll out”. “The most expensive form of energy available. “Why you would do that with these wonderful renewable resources we have in Australia is beyond me.” Mr Bowen joined Sky News Australia to discuss his energy plans for Australia and his refusal to use nuclear energy.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has demanded “full accountability” for the death of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza. Mr Albanese said the Australian government has already contacted the Israeli government directly. “We are contacting the Israeli Ambassador to ask for accountability here," he said during a media conference on Tuesday. “The truth is that this is beyond any reasonable circumstance that someone going about, providing aid and humanitarian assistance, should lose their life. “And there were four aid workers as well as a Palestinian driver in this vehicle. This is a human tragedy that should never have occurred, that is completely unacceptable. “Australia will seek full and proper accountability as you would expect for how this could have occurred.”
Independent Economist Chris Richardson says the latest unemployment rate in Australia is “spectacularly good”. Mr Richardson joined Sky News Australia to discuss inflation and the unemployment data in Australia. “The last bit of news we got was … spectacularly good at 3.7 per cent,” he told Sky News Australia. “Remember, when unemployment was at its low – 3.4 per cent a while back – that was the lowest in more than half a century. “So, at 3.7 per cent, the good news is that the slowdown of the Australian economy hasn’t cost a lot of jobs.”
Independent Economist Chris Richardson says rate cuts in the US won’t be coming “that soon”. Mr Richardson joined Sky News Australia to discuss inflation and future rate relief. “We’re not the only ones – all around the world, you’re seeing a similar story,” he said. “The US is a great example – inflation has struggled to go down in the last couple of months in the US. “That means their rate cuts – yes, they’ll get them comfortably before ours, but not that soon.”
Independent economist Chris Richardson explains the “big factors” delaying interest rate cuts in Australia. Mr Richardson pointed out inflation started later in Australia than other parts of the world. “Our rates are still a bit higher than a bunch of other nations,” he told Sky News Australia. “But the other big factor is … tax cuts. “We are going to get relief in Australia from pressure on our cost of living, but that first round of relief will come as tax cuts in three months – that pushes back the timing of those rate cuts.”
Sky News host Liz Storer and Sky News contributor Joe Hildebrand have clashed over Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen taking two separate taxpayer-funded jets to the same event. Anthony Albanese and Chris Bowen both came under fire for using two RAAF jets to fly to the Hunter Valley last week. Energy Minister Chris Bowen says the decision to take private jets was in line with advice from the Royal Australian Air Force. “A commercial flight is $208 –$208,” Ms Storer told Sky News host Sharri Markson. “You mean to tell me there wasn’t a more affordable option between private jets and some sort of commercial arrangement?”
Sky News contributor Joe Hildebrand has defended Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen’s use of two private jets to get to the same event as a prime minister’s “time is precious”. Anthony Albanese and Chris Bowen both came under fire for using two RAAF jets to fly to the Hunter Valley last week. Energy Minister Chris Bowen says the decision to take private jets was in line with advice from the Royal Australian Air Force. “A Prime Minister’s time is precious – we don’t expect them to drive or take the bus like the rest of us,” Mr Hildebrand told Sky News host Sharri Markson. “He’s the leader of the country – he’s not like everyone else.”
The Australian Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says the idea the United Nations has any “moral weight” is “beyond parody”. “You couldn’t make it up – Saudi Arabia to head women’s rights,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “I mean, it’s just a joke. “The idea that it has any moral weight, that it should govern something Australia does because of its moral weight … I mean it’s beyond parody. “This is sort of beyond parody.”
The Australian Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Biden is pro-Israel but is “very weak” and “under a lot of political pressure”. “I think Biden is essentially pro-Israel but is basically very weak, and he’s under a lot of political pressure,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “The West has seen massive Muslim immigration to all Western nations, and they are now a factor in domestic politics. “Biden is being pressured by the big Arab vote in Michigan, which is a state he must win if he’s going to win in November. “At the same time, the US has announced another $2.5 billion in military equipment for Israel … so Biden is talking out of both sides of his mouth at once.”
The Australian Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Netanyahu is “passed his use-by date” and “should resign” as a result of Israel’s war in Gaza. Protesters gathered in Jerusalem, calling for the release of hostages and the removal of Netanyahu over the weekend. Many attending the protest believe Netanyahu hasn’t done enough – he hasn’t prioritised the return of the hostages; he’s been concentrating on other things like the prosecution of the war. “I do think Netanyahu is now passed his use-by date,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “I don’t think he’s the villain of all worlds, but his presence there doesn’t help Israel. “Golda Meir resigned as a result of the Yom Kippur War, and I think Benjamin Netanyahu should resign as a result of this.”
The Australian Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says the Albanese government’s performance on the Israel-Hamas war has been “very, very poor” because of their “virtue signalling”. “If you’re sincere about this, you have to say the hostages will be released, and then we’ll have a ceasefire,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “If Hamas won’t release the hostages, therefore, you’re not putting demand on Israel to have a ceasefire. “What the UN are saying and what the Albanese government are saying – and I think their performance on this has really been very, very poor – they are saying that Israel must have a ceasefire no matter what Hamas does. “So what happens then, the day after the ceasefire is announced, Hamas continues to fire rockets at Israeli towns and continues to shoot at Israeli soldiers. “The whole of the international commentary is really a kind of … virtue signalling; it’s a kind of performative thing.”
High-profile athletes have penned an open letter to Queensland Premier Steven Miles. They’re calling on him to reconsider the Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre as the main venue for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. Grant Hackett, Sally Pearson and Karni Liddell are among the 14 athletes who have signed the letter. Mr Miles is committing billions of dollars to upgrade the facility. That is despite an independent review recommending a new stadium be built instead.
Sky News host Liz Storer says a new report on housing has told Australians what they “already knew”. A report from the Institute of Public Affairs has found an extra 63,000 homes would need to have been built last year to accommodate new migrants into Australia. “We don’t have enough housing to accommodate the number of immigrants our government keeps just pouring into Australia,” Ms Storer said. “This just seems like a crisis that is completely out of hand now. “People are going without; can’t rent, can’t buy and you’ve got 43,000 homes sitting empty in one state.”
Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says the Labor government’s decision to push for more solar panels to be made in Australia is “totally driven by politics”. Mr Canavan joined Sky News host Paul Murray to discuss the government’s latest $1 billion initiative to boost Australian manufacture of solar panels. “I do support government trying to bring back more manufacturing to Australia,” he said. “I do agree with Graham though. “This particular decision seems to be totally driven by politics, nothing to do with economics.”
Sky News host Liz Storer says Donald Trump “knows how to do a good Easter message”. The former president released a video message on Easter in which remembered the “suffering and death” of Jesus and “his glorious resurrection” on the third day. “Christ has risen indeed,” Ms Storer said. “I love it ... here is someone who is saying this is a Christian nation, I still speak the language. “Whether you want to argue that he himself is a Christian is not – I don’t care.”
Western Australia has begun to turn against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. “Whatever magical connection he seemed to have with Western Australia seems to have been broken,” Sky News host Paul Murray said. “Newspoll, they’ve been having a look at the past three months polling, and they’ve broken things down state by state. “And it shows the Labor Party is down the best part of three per cent. “That would be enough to flip at least two – maybe three seats if there was an election held this weekend.”
The Australian’s Environment Editor Graham Lloyd says the Labor government has a “complete lack of self-awareness” on the agenda it pushes and the contradictory actions it takes. His comments follow the Labor government receiving backlash for both Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen taking two separate private jets from Canberra to a clean energy announcement in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. “What it displays is a complete lack of self-awareness on the part of the ruling class,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray. “That extends to taking the airfares and then subsidising rich people to build panels that we know are going to be more expensive than the things we can currently get from overseas, then presumably, subsidise households to buy them. “This looks like it has a lot more to do with politics than it does economics, I think we’re going to see more of it.”
Leading ‘No’ Voice referendum campaigner Warren Mundine has labelled South Australia’s state-based Voice as a “farce”. South Australia's version of the Voice to Parliament has just held its first election with only nine per cent of Aboriginal adults choosing to vote. “This is becoming a joke,” Mr Mundine told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “These Labor premiers and chief ministers – they are just pushing this line ... that Aboriginal people want these things. “The whole thing is a farce ... they should be focusing on the real issues that are happening in remote and regional Australia.”
