The Queensland Labor Party is fearing a bad result in one of two Brisbane by-elections today could foreshadow the end of the Miles government in October’s state poll. Voters in Queensland’s southeast will head to the polls on Saturday for two by-elections – Inala and Ipswich West. Some are predicting a close contest in Ipswich West, which Labor won in 2020 with a margin of 14.35 per cent. Labor fears it could be whittled away at the polls as a protest against the rising cost of living, youth crime and the increased pressure on the Queensland hospital system. Labor is expected to retain Inala, which was vacated by former premier Annastacia Palaszczuk when she stepped down in December.

Health Services Union Secretary Gerard Hayes says the Aged Care industry receiving a wage rise of up to 28 per cent is “long overdue”. Mr Hayes joined Sky News Australia presenter Ortenzia Borre to discuss the benefits and empowerment of a properly funded workforce. “It is a great outcome for the vast majority of workers in health who are women,” he said. “It is really important we note at the moment that the average superannuation balance for women working in Aged Care is $18,000. “So having a wage increase between 18 and 28 per cent brings them into a competitive market with health facilities across the country.”
The Fair Work Commission has ruled in favour of wage increases for thousands of Aged Care workers. The panel determined workers in direct care roles deserved higher pay rises than the 15 per cent increase given in 2022. Personal carers will see wage increases of between 18 and 28 per cent, while home carers will receive increases of around 16 to 25 per cent. The Prime Minister has backed Fair Work's decision despite concerns the decision could lead to higher inflation. Economists warn the $3 billion injection could place wage pressures on other sectors.
