Small Business Women Australia founder Amanda Rose says there is a “tsunami of changes” with the Albanese government’s Industrial Relations reforms. Ms Rose said there are “hundreds of pages” to understand these changes. “What’s concerning is a lot of people don’t even know the details,” Ms Rose told Sky News Australia. “One is the changes of casual, independent contractors. “People are literally shutting their businesses down because they can’t cope with the cost of living then this comes.”
A new Redbridge poll has shown Labor’s female primary vote has dipped. The polling shows it fell from 35 to 30 per cent. The Redbridge polling has also shown the Coalition’s has risen. Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell discusses footage of the “extraordinary incident” in Canberra which shows Barnaby Joyce lying on the ground while mumbling obscenities into his phone. The former deputy prime minister reportedly fell off a planter box after he attended functions where alcohol was served at Parliament House on Wednesday night. “I understand the Nationals Leader David Littleproud telephoned Barnaby Joyce on Friday to see what had happened,” Mr Clennell said. “I contacted the former deputy prime minister for his side of the story yesterday. “He said he didn’t want to talk about it or what conversations he might have had with his leader.”
Labor is tipped to win the Dunkley by-election in a close contest next month, Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell reveals. The performance of Liberal candidate and Frankston mayor Nathan Conroy is set to play in the result, according to polling leaked to Sky News. Labor polling out of Dunkley shows the government is likely to retain the seat. The by-election comes amid the government’s recently announced changes to the stage three tax cuts, which saw tax cuts redirected from higher earners to lower and middle-income earners. The poll found 69 per cent of people in Dunkley nominating help with cost-of-living pressures as a key issue motivating how they vote.
At least 16 children have been rushed to hospital after suffering suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at an ice skating rink in Adelaide. Firefighters attended the Ice Arena on Sunday morning to test for harmful gasses. They found high levels of the chemical in the air. Authorities are currently investigating whether any more people have been affected.
A SpaceX crew dragon capsule has landed in the Atlantic Ocean. The capsule was due for return after a record three-week-long mission to an international space station. The four-man crew landed off the coast of Daytona Beach in Florida. A recovery team was waiting for the SpaceX crew and assisted them out and safely to shore. It was the longest private flight for Axiom Space since the missions started in 2022.
Rome's Colosseum has become the latest battleground for a clash between farmers and the government. Italian farmers had planned the rally to protest against EU climate change policies which they believe will affect their livelihoods. A convoy of tractors, escorted by police, staged a protest by the historic landmark. The farmers demanded action from authorities on low produce prices and rising costs. Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded by saying the government will partially reintroduce a tax break for farmers.
Australian actress Margot Robbie has taken the spotlight at this year's AACTA Awards. Ms Robbie attended the awards ceremony held on her native Gold Coast, taking out the prestigious Trailblazer Award. The Barbie star won the award both for her acting roles and production work with her company, LuckyChap Entertainment. She also brought home the vaunted Audience Choice Award for Favourite Actress, and International Award for Best Lead Actress in Film. Iconic kids' show Bluey took out Best Children's Program, while horror feature Talk to Me won both the Best Film and Best Direction awards.
An investigation into Victoria's botched bid to stage the 2026 Commonwealth Games is expected to reveal bureaucratic incompetence is to blame. It has been reported the Victorian Auditor General's inquiry will also highlight a lack of due diligence was executed in the lead-up to the event's cancellation. The decision by former state premier Daniel Andrews to pull out of the games is expected to cost taxpayers at least $600 million. The former premier made the announcement in July 2023, sparking much backlash. Despite several cities showing some enthusiasm, the 2026 Games has yet to find a new home.
A Russian tour group has become the first to arrive in North Korea since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Russia says an Air Koryo flight carried nearly 100 passengers into North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, on Friday. Russia and North Korea have recently grown closer, after a rare overseas meeting between Kim Jong-Un and Vladimir Putin in eastern Russia last year. The North Korean embassy says it looks forward to new encounters with Russian tourists. Visitors will spend four days in and around the capital city.
Herald Sun’s Cartoonist Mark Knight has ridiculed the Greens for living in a “wonderland” as he questioned how the media industry could survive the new disconnect law stemming from Labor’s recent IR reforms. “How would the media survive if we disconnected after a certain hour?” Mr Knight asked Sky News Australia host Steve Price. “Things like 9/11 – we went all night during those amazing stories. “That is the way the Greens work, as Paul Keating said, they are the fairies at the bottom of the garden. “They live in this little wonderland, remote from the real world.”
Author Douglas Murray says he does not think “anyone is safe in modern Britain” after his event at the Apollo Theatre in London was moved due to protests and venue staff suffering leaked addresses and abuse. “I was meant to be speaking at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in the heart of the west end, 1,000 people were turning out and the theatre was bullied into cancelling the event on the day,” Mr Murray told Sky News Australia host Rita Panahi. “The event was moved to a synagogue which was the only place the police could protect. “Some of the staff were threatened … the staff said they wouldn’t turn up to work so then more people were brought in from another theatre and they had their addresses leaked. “They were apparently threatened and intimidated in turn and they too refused to turn up.”
Nicotine pouches are the next product using fun flavors and advertising to hook Australians to nicotine, according to experts. Though illegal to import, their popularity has skyrocketed nationally in recent years and are now available in stores right across the country. Experts worry young Australians may switch from one vice to another with nicotine pouches being a likely replacement. The fruity-flavoured pouches are tobacco free but still loaded with nicotine – with some containing the equivalent of ten packets of cigarettes. From 2022 to 2023, the seizure of nicotine pouches at the Australian border exploded from just over 108,000 units to almost 3.5 million.

From ultimatums to political threats, Tasmania’s minority Liberal government still hangs in the balance. Premier Jeremy Rockliff is worried parliament will be ungovernable amid political pushback over the cost of Tasmania's AFL stadium and team. Mr Rockliff met the two rebel independents after demanding they guarantee support for the government or face the prospect of an early election. While the trio have been at loggerheads over several issues, it’s the $375 million in Tasmanian taxpayer funding for the stadium in Hobart that remains the flashpoint.

Two people have died after a light plane crashed onto a busy highway in the US state of Florida. Vision shows the light plane and a small car engulfed in flames. The plane made impact at 3:12 pm (local time) according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The crash occurred on Interstate 75. All lanes of the highway have been closed.
Passengers who have their flights delayed or cancelled could soon be compensated. The Coalition wants to fast-track a bill through the Senate which could compel airlines to refund passengers for delays and set out their obligations to customers more clearly. The bill would require majority support in the Senate and the House of Representatives. More passengers have had longer wait times for replacement flights since before the pandemic. Qantas has hired a second consultancy firm to improve its issues with delays and cancellations in a bid to repair its reputation as the national carrier.
Queensland has broken six weather records in 2023. The Sunshine State sizzled through above average temperatures all year - making it the seventh-hottest year since 1910. The hottest day was at Winton Airport on December 30 - where the mercury nudged 47 degrees. This year, Birdsville has already beaten its own temperature record – reaching 46.8C on January 13. Meteorologists believe the warmer weather could stay around until mid-autumn.
Prince Harry has reached a financial settlement with Mirror Group Newspapers over the remaining part of his phone hacking claim. His lawyer says the Duke of Sussex will be in line for a substantial additional sum by way of damages before criticising Piers Morgan, who was editor of the tabloid. Prince Harry’s case against Mirror Group proved there was widespread phone hacking and senior executives, including former editor Piers Morgan, knew about it. The Duke of Sussex was awarded a substantial sum on top of the £140,000 he received in December. Mirror Group said it was pleased to have reached an agreement, as the Duke of Sussex now has other tabloids in his sights.
