Sydney Water has confirmed that cancer-linked 'forever chemicals' or PFAS have been detected in a number of sites across Sydney's water catchment. The results indicate the PFAS concentrations are above US safety thresholds but within Australia's drinking water guidelines. The chemicals were detected at high levels in the Blue Mountains, North Richmond, and Cascade Dam. The detection of PFAS chemicals in drinking water has spurred Sydney Water to increase monitoring in affected areas.

Lilly See Kee has applauded a scholarship program supported by the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation which has now helped 1,000 students complete Year 12. Ms See Kee is a Torres Strait Islander woman from Queensland's Thursday Island and served as a First Nations Student Representative at her school. “The scholarship has helped me with everything you can think of,” she told Sky News Australia. “It is not just my school fees they help me with – they help me to make sure I always have the right uniform and school supplies, and they just helped me apply to uni.” The AIEF scholarship graduate revealed her plans to study speech pathology at university and eventually go back and help her Thursday Island community.

The Motley Fool Chief Investment Officer Scott Phillips says banks are effectively “betting on” rates being lower rather than higher in the future. This comes as Australia’s largest banks are making significant cuts in the interest rates they pay on term deposits ahead of the Reserve Bank. “What the banks are effectively betting on is that rates will be lower rather than higher in the future,” Mr Phillips told Sky News Australia. “They expect mortgage rates to come down.”

New figures show Australia is accepting more refugees from Gaza than most other developed nations. “Australia is a generous country, and we are historically one of the most generous countries in the world, accepting more refugees for permanent resettlement on a per capita basis than almost any other country in the world,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News Australia. “That is something we should have a proud record of.”

The project, first conceived by a former Coalition government, has been deemed a game-changer as it has shortened many people’s commute to work. Former Republican congressman George Santos has pleaded guilty to criminal corruption weeks before his federal trial was to begin. He has pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft relating to his 2022 House campaign. Mr Santos is facing a minimum of two years in prison and up to 22 years in total. His sentencing is scheduled for February 7.

The super yacht is owned by the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who is among those missing. A search effort is underway for survivors after the super yacht carrying 22 was hit by extreme weather and sank off the coast of Sicily.
