South Korean lawmakers on Thursday (September 26) passed a bill that criminalizes possessing or watching sexually explicit deepfake images and videos, with penalties set to include prison terms and fines. There has been an outcry in South Korea over Telegram group chats where sexually explicit and illegal deepfakes were created and widely shared, prompting calls for tougher punishment. Currently, making sexually explicit deepfakes with the intention of distributing them is punishable by five years in prison or a fine of 50 million won under the Sexual Violence Prevention and Victims Protection Act. Anyone purchasing, saving or watching such material could face up to three years in jail or be fined up to 30 million won ($22,600), according to the bill. When the new law takes effect, the maximum sentence for such crimes will also increase to seven years regardless of the intention. Atlanta residents grappled with damage from Tropical Storm Helene on Friday (September 27) after it roared through Florida and Georgia, killing at least four people, swamping neighborhoods and leaving more than 3 million homes and businesses without power. Heavy flooding led to the rescue of over two dozen people in the Peachtree Creek area. In the Peachtree Park Apartments in Buckhead, floodwaters rose significantly, submerging vehicles and threatening homes. Longtime resident Felton Hall expressed shock at the extent of the flooding, saying that he had expected only wind damage. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue Israel's attacks on Iranian-backed fighters in Lebanon in a closely watched United Nations speech on Friday (September 27) as hopes faded for a ceasefire that could head off an all-out regional war. Several delegations walked out as Netanyahu approached the lectern while supporters in the gallery cheered. In southern Lebanon, Israel continued to strike Hezbollah targets while diplomats at the U.N. voiced fears the attacks could flare into a wider war that draws in Israel's arch-foe, Iran. In his speech, Netanyahu sought to pin blame for the conflict on Iran, whose delegation was absent for the speech. He said Israel was defending itself against Tehran on seven fronts, including against Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Houthis in Yemen. Iran's U.N. delegation did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Israel will press on with discussions on ceasefire proposals for Lebanon in the days ahead, Netanyahu said earlier on Friday, and Washington warned that further escalation would make it harder for civilians on both sides to return home. But Netanyahu insisted that Israel's campaign would continue. The Israeli prime minister also called for tougher action on Iran's nuclear program, including a return of U.N. sanctions which were lifted in 2015 under a nuclear deal with major world powers. A Security Council resolution, which enshrined the nuclear deal and provided the power to restore U.N. sanctions, expires in October 2025. Netanyahu reiterated his earlier vows that Israel would block Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. On the conflict in Gaza, where U.S.-led ceasefire talks have stalled, Netanyahu said the war can end if Hamas militants who carried out an Oct. 7 attack in Israel surrender, lay down their weapons and return hostages seized in the attack. During the speech, he cited the presence in the hall of families of hostages seized by Hamas on Oct. 7. The war began when Hamas gunmen stormed Israeli communities, killing around 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel's military has leveled swaths of the besieged Palestinian enclave, driving nearly all of its 2.3 million people from their homes, giving rise to deadly hunger and disease and killing more than 41,000 people, according to Palestinian health authorities. At least 11 people have died in the collapse of an illegal gold mine in Indonesia's province of West Sumatra, following a landslide caused by heavy rains, an official said on Saturday (September 28). Small-scale and illegal mining has often caused accidents in Indonesia, where mineral resources are located in remote areas in conditions difficult for authorities to regulate. The illegal gold mine in the district of Solok collapsed after a landslide on Thursday (September 26) evening. Police, military and local residents launched a search early on Friday (September 27) for the missing. Local search and rescue agency official Abdul Malik estimated there were 25 people in the mine, of whom 11 died, 12 survived and two are still being evacuated. A wave of air raids rocked Beirut early on Saturday (September 28), lighting up the Lebanese capital's night sky as Israel stepped up its attacks on the militant group Hezbollah. Reuters witnesses heard more than 20 airstrikes before dawn on Saturday. Abandoning their homes in the southern suburbs, thousands of Lebanese congregated in squares, parks and sidewalks in downtown Beirut and seaside areas. The series of strikes are by far the most powerful by Israel on Beirut during nearly a year of war with Hezbollah. It marked a sharp escalation of a conflict that has involved daily missile and rocket fire between the two sides. Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris visited the U.S.-Mexico border for the first time in her 2024 presidential campaign on Friday (September 27), calling for tighter asylum restrictions and vowing to make stopping fentanyl from entering the U.S. a "top priority." Harris spoke in Douglas, Arizona, a border town of less than 17,000 people, on Friday, where she accused her Republican rival Donald Trump of "fanning the flames of fear and division," over the impact of immigrants on American life. Harris called for more punitive measures for people crossing the border illegally, following an asylum ban for those entering the U.S. illegally established by President Joe Biden this year. "I will take further action to keep the border closed between ports of entry. Those who cross our borders unlawfully will be apprehended and removed and barred from re-entering for five years," Harris said. "We will pursue more severe criminal charges against repeat violators, and if someone does not make an asylum request at a legal point of entry and instead crosses our border unlawfully, they will be barred from receiving asylum," she said. But Harris also said that her policy would forge a path for a humane immigration program. "I reject the false choice that suggests we must either choose between securing our border or creating a system of immigration that is safe, orderly and humane," Harris said. "We can and we must do both." Harris was introduced by Theresa Guerrero, whose 31-year-old son Jacob Guerrero died from fentanyl poisoning. She accused Trump of blocking a comprehensive border security bill that would have stemmed the flow of fentanyl. Harris said she would target the "entire global fentanyl supply chain" to materially and sustainably disrupt the flow of illicit fentanyl, calling on China to do more to crack down on fentanyl precursor chemicals.
