A first for RSS Indomitable, as it sailed to victory, picking up the award for Best Maritime Security Unit. It's one of 30 military units that emerged tops at this year's Singapore Armed Forces Best Unit competition. Up in the air, the Air Force's 142 Squadron reclaimed the title of Best Fighter Squadron. For the 21st year running, the Army's 1st Commando Battalion was crowned Best Combat Unit. The annual competition recognises units that have excelled in areas such as combat readiness and operational proficiency.
The National Trades Union Congress will take over three more recreation centres for migrant workers from August. It will manage four out of a total of nine. The Manpower Ministry said NTUC was chosen as it has a good grasp of migrant workers' needs. It added that it learnt how important such centres were during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were used as recovery facilities and vaccination centres. Such centres are now designed to be quickly repurposed if needed. MOM will also be progressively upgrading other RCs around the island, starting with Penjuru next year.
Singapore's oil spill clean-up is now entering its second phase, with a bit more deep cleaning. Crews are targeting areas that are harder to reach, like rock bunds and oil that's trapped deeper in the sand. This comes nearly two weeks after the 14 June shipping crash, which spilled more than 400 tonnes of oil into Singapore's waters. Singapore will allow more people to have assistance dogs in public housing flats. Those with physical disabilities, are deaf, or hard of hearing will be allowed to have such dogs later this year. Currently, there are only nine assistance dogs in Singapore and they all support blind people. The move is Singapore's latest step toward a more inclusive society.
