India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday (Jun 4) failed to win a parliamentary majority for the first time in a decade. Ms Prerna Singh, Mahatma Gandhi Associate Professor of political science and international studies at Brown University, said the results were a testament to the Indian voter and a sign of how wrong exit polls can be. It is also an important signal for a puncturing of the politics of hubris and hate on the one hand, and the Hindutva political ideology on the other hand, she told CNA’s Asia First. India's opposition Congress Party is holding a special press briefing, with party president Mallikarjun Kharge and leader Rahul Gandhi speaking. Mr Gandhi said the people of India have "unanimously rejected" Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress is leading in more than 90 seats -- a marked improvement from 52 during the 2019 election. The opposition INDIA alliance has already surpassed exit poll expectations by crossing the 200-mark.
