Japan's Shigeru Ishiba was reelected prime minister on Monday, after winning against the leader of the main opposition party, Yoshihiko Noda, in a runoff. But Mr Ishiba now faces the challenge of pushing through his policy agenda, after his Liberal Democratic Party lost its parliamentary majority in last month's general election. Singapore and China will upgrade a longstanding free trade agreement, which will enter into force at the end of the year. It will level the playing field for Singapore investors, who will benefit from greater market access to China. This was one of the 25 agreements signed at the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation, the highest bilateral platform between both countries. The platform celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Singapore police may soon have powers to stop people from transferring money to suspected scammers, in what could be the first such law in the world. If passed, it will be used as a last resort on victims who continue to send money, despite warnings that it could be a scam. Mr Beaver Chua, head of anti-fraud at OCBC, shared what this unprecedented law could mean for banks, in terms of allocating manpower and handling customer requests for transferring money.

The tax agency has clawed back more than $3 million in unpaid taxes and penalties from some 49 firms in Singapore's funeral industry. That's more than three in four firms that have been under investigation since 2019. The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore said poor bookkeeping practices in the industry can lead to false declarations of income, or failing to register for Goods and Services Tax on time. IRAS is encouraging businesses in the sector to take up digital accounting software. Eugene Chow reports.

The national carrier posted a net profit of S$742 million for the first half of its financial year that ended in September -- a drop of nearly 49% compared to last year, as passenger capacity outweighed travel demand.
